Although I really like my ElectricBeach FH3, I find myself wanting something with more dynamic scale and slam. I started looking at vintage French speakers but I am wary of buying old/knackered speakers as I will be buying blind. My thoughts s turned to a he Focal 1028BE, but these have now been replaced by 1028BE2 and are quite expensive. Browsing the web for other speakers I came across reviews of Jean Marie Reynaud speakers. The Offrande Supreme V2 gets really good reviews but they are €7k new. I have seen a pair 2nd hand in a dealer a few hours away for €4K. I then found a JMR dealer in Toulouse who also sells Triangle, Focal and a few other French brands so I intend on paying him a visit. My thoughts it I thoughts were to lo M at the Euterpe Supreme (2.5k€), but I always fancied a set of Edingdales and with the MkII available at £1.7k they are still an option.
My listening room has a floor space of 3.5m x 5.5m (other wall is about 8m) or 12ft x 18ft in old talk, and is in the roof space of my house on a mezzanine floor, so has a sloping ceilings with exposed beams. The room is currently set to play across the narrow part of the room, meaning my head is 2.7m away from the centre of the drivers of my FH3.
With this in mind, due to the space I have, should I forget floor standing speakers and look to get a nice pair of JMR Offrande?

I have the Focal 1028 Be and they are very good speakers but need room to breath (which I haven't particularly given them) to sound at their best. They are also quite a forward sounding speaker, so need a system to suite.
Overall though, they have the sweetest and most realistic vocal I have heard on speakers in a long time, and driven by the right equipment they can sound quite amazing.
I bought mine for second hand, and I have seen them pop up every so often, so maybe look out for a pair.

What are JM Lab speaker prices like on the French market? I used to have JM Lab Mezzo Utopias that have plenty of slam and scale and they may be reasonably priced. JM Lab were the upmarket brand for Focal.

A pair of 1028 BE on the 2nd hand market are currently €3600. I can get new ones for that! I searched for JM Lab but can't find any Mezzo Utopia to get some kind of reference.
The JMR Euterpe Supreme are suppos d to be very good, and I understand that the Offrande are supposed to be better. I am in no rush.

Since Focal and Naim joined arms, the price of Focal speakers has gone up at a significant rate. For instance, my understanding is that the predecessor to the 1028 Be, the 1027 Be were circa £4000, whereas the 1028 Be were £5999 the last time I looked.

I searched for JM Lab but can't find any Mezzo Utopia to get some kind of reference. I think the Alto Utopia took over as the nearest ones. This pair are in France. Use HiFi Shark to find more.

Thanks Martin. I actually used "Le Bon Coin" to search directly.

You can get away with floorstanders just do net something to big Lots of good speakers to choose from that should work well in your room Spendor Se9 or 8s would be worth a listen ]Have you thought about adding a sub to your speakers That will help with the bottom end which is where they need help

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I have a sub partnering my FH3s already - a MJ Acoustics Pro 50

I think whilst you can find speakers with more scale and weight it will be hard to match the speed and intimacy without spending lots of money My suggestion is try lots of speakers, take your time before deciding

Make some OB's. If you like the Mark Audio driver, use that for say 200hz up, with a pair per side of 15" Eminence Beta woofers. Cost is around 60 quid or so each for the drivers, and a bit of wood for the baffles. Save you a fortune and will sound great.

Second hand Ruarks are pretty hard to beat for the money. Back in the day when I had ProAc D25's (before seeing the Tannoy DC and then multi way horn way forward), a pair of Ruark Talisman II's were pretty good at much less cost. Ruark Crusaders are good for more slam.
Otherwise as John says Spendor or listen to some suitable ProAc or Tannoy, or if you are near come and listen to my system

Steve,
Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately I am nowhere near enough to "pop round" for a listen. I really enjoy the FH3s, and as John says, they do something special, so even though I may go browsing new speakers, they need to be good if I am going to buy them.

Zingalis are horn loaded, but I must admit to having found them a little 'cuppy' in the midrange.

My frugels are back in play due to the 57s having a wee melt down-so i know what they sound like. You mentioned the Eddingdales-I bought my 57s from Colin Topps who was kind enough to demo his speakers to me. Ive heard Garys many times and they are something special but hearing them in Colins set up with 300b amps was a revelation-they presented the finest noise I have heard.
Gary partnered them with a 300b amp and again the sound just gelled. He had run them with an amptastic mini 1 and it wasnt too shabby to be honest. They arent fussy placement wise and are really efficient power wise. Colin might be worth a PM to see what he can do for your room/amplification.
Ive never heard bass texture and quality like it before or since....
Alis suggestion of OBs is spot on-they are terrific sounding with all the delicacy of a static and slam of a big box speaker.

If you are interested in a Colin Topps build, he and his business partner, Scott, currently have a pair of their Jenna speakers for sale. I have heard these many times and they sound lovely. They are basically a scaled down version of Edingdales and have the same sound signature but don't reach quite so far down in the bass. They have the same easy driving load and being similar in size to your FH3's, are often domestically acceptable. At the asking price, these speakers are an absolute bargain. www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6825&start=15Scroll down to last post by scottmoose.

Thanks for the info chaps. I have already been in touch with acolin and Scott, and they seem to think the Edingdales are more suited to what I am after. My other option at the moment is the Jean-Marie Reynaud Euterpe Supreme. If only I could do a back to back comparison.
