I was thinking the other day how an Expensive/Extensive CD collection could end up being dead money. As the majority of CD Players, owned by Audio guys are a carefully selected item, what happens in the future when the Lazer gives up the ghost & in most cases becomes obsolete. I notice CD players are a lot thinner on the ground than a few years ago, so the burning question is what are you going to do for a replacement in the future?? after all remember your very fussy & choices will be near on none! Also all that money you pumped into the present machine wasted. Ive always said that big CD collections are not a very good idea imho.
I remember when my Expensive Micromega CD player packed up, It took me years to find one that equalled the sound, that was ten years ago.
Will you be forced to sell up & turn completely to file based Source? Just a thought. Thats the beauty about Analogue, You will never be forced to let go.
When software/media players changes in the future as do File codecs do its no great loss adapting because they are basically nothing, just a file full of 0' & 1's easilly replaceable.

There has been an increase in CD player models with Japanese brands moving away from exclusively home cinema. Always will be a market for hi-end digital disc playback at a price. I can't say if the current crop of affordable players is equal to the high end from the 90s but the CXC does suggest progress in terms of value and is certainly the best sounding transport I have owned, even if the draw feels somewhat flimsy. If worst comes to worst there are billions of computer drives out there for ripping to files.

One of the Key points i was getting at is Audiophiles are fussy which makes it very very hard if impossible in the future when they machine they love & spent loads of cutter on dies. Its about time CD was wrapped up tbh.
Digital will be an ever evolving thing & at the same time Vinyl will always move in line with it ie: Vinyl pressed from up to date Digital files. etc..
I just would not put my money into a format the relys on unrepairable technology because at the end of the day at some point it will become obsolete. You can go out & buy a hundred Styli for your record player cartridge you love but you cannot go out & buy a Lazer years down the line.
You know & i know that Audiophiles will not just walk into a shop & buy any old machine they can lay their hands on. The hobby apparently does not work that way..

I primarily use streaming now, so import all of my CD's onto my computer.
As for CD players, I think there is still a market out there for Hifi and general, but not the market there once was for obvious reasons.

Moving back to CD Collections, most CD's lose their value very quickly. A lot of albums I originally bought for say £10-13 are now worth anywhere up to £1, but I doubt I'll ever sell them, so it doesn't bother me all that much

I've had to recently repair my Ayre SACD player with a new drive mech, taken from a donor DVD player. There will always be ways and means. As for my CD collection being dead money, yes I think I probably agree with you. Where will it go when I die? I can't see anyone being interested in it, not even my son. I'm under no illusions that my collection is for me to enjoy while I live, and its worth at the end of my days is of little concern. Perhaps it ought to go up on the pyre with me

Tbh. ive often wondered why i grill sellers so much about the condition of Record sleeves & why i always pay a premium for the sleeve condition compared to a lesser condition sleeve.. Wife says why dont you just concentrate on the Record condition & buy some high quality Plain Card sleeves, after all 12" singles which i have far too many even thou i sold Thousands last Sunday are not worth much tbh..

Just buy something from the Technics SL-P range. They all use the same SOALP1200 laser. Job done. 12" singles have no value? I've been waiting for this to drop in price for about the past year - but it hasn't. So I thought I'd best get it. £8 with postage. Anyway, how's it hangin' André? Me auld fruit.

It's difficult to buy a near mint 12" for less than 8 quid posted nowadays.
Some of the prices on Discogs are just crazy and I'm not talking about rare records here. Only decent prices I've found really have been from German dealers.

This is the first 12"er I ever bought. Got it from some mail-order record club I was in decades ago. Not sure if it was Gemm Records. Stonkin' sound. Still have it.

It would take months and all I would end up with is... a copy of all my CDs!

But people may not want files, besides i would not like to think i was ripping say a thousand CD's & also you basically have a rack full of CD's doing nothing because as i gather you have to retain the CD when ripped to be within the law!!

I know I'm repeating myself, but there's no passion, no sense of selection, to having a bunch of files on a server, no matter how well dressed up in a snazzy UI it is.
I actually like taking my time, browsing and picking a CD or LP and putting it on. Gives me time between tracks to think about what I've just listened to and how that links to my next selection. Forces a space between the music, if you like.

I find myself restricted to Discogs which aint fun, E-Bay i dont even attempt buying records from.. My first 12" was soft cell "Tainted Love"
