The problem is, it only takes one latent infected computer to be turned on this morning. They will have to have removed share permissions, but that's across thousands of users and will be disruptive in its own right. That's why I had set up two login options on all the computers in my office in my previous place of work. The normal user login joined the network. The maintenance login did not connect to the network, the mail server, or the internet. That then allowed us to scan the PC for problems. We had a separate USB dongle to connect to a wireless router that would allow us to connect to the internet to install updates etc. At home I use a different method. The computers do not connect to each other on a network, but they can still share the wireless printer and wireless NAS, which runs on Linux. It has worked OK so far.

I use the Local Administrator (which is set to a common password when we image the machines). This has no access rights (not even to internet) but allows me to scan using a USB or CD based malware scanner. It works, but the real issue is identifying the suspect machines otherwise you're in for a world of scanning.

We've just had a global email come out at work to check we have the appropriate updates on our PC.
Being that the majority of the business rarely visit their offices and rarely connect to the company's systems, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a fair few risky machines.

I see it's now being reported that the "virus" used in the attack was "stolen" from that well-known oxymoron, U.S. Intelligence.

The IndependentI'm sure that's all hearsay designed to invoke anxiety and nothing more. It was certainly true in January of last year according to Popular Mechanics and our Defence Secretary was "unable to deny" that it was still the case on The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday as reported by The Independent

Imagine having to pay U$300 in bitcoins before you can launch a nuclear missile.

Other con-artists are getting in on the act - just had one of those Indian Microsoft Support calls saying they noted I had problems with my Windows software - as usual told them I am Apple.

Yeah, I've had experience of that type of call, Alan... I usually try and keep them on the line as long as I can just for fun.

A quick heart-stopping moment this morning - I order my ongoing medication online and usually that's a great system. Local news this morning said problem with prescriptions, and when I checked they'd switched off the online system. Happily a quick check with the pharmacy and my prescription had gone through the system just before it was closed down... phew...

Yeah, I gave up trying to request my prescriptions online as it never works properly
So send my local pharmacy an email on a monthly basis, which works 8/9 out of 10 times, occasionally they get it wrong, but they are pretty good.

I now tell them that I actually work for Micro$oft and ask them to put me through to "Dave" in the office. The silences are often deafening.
