Following on from our top 3 choral here is a timely discussion on Gramophone about the different ways to interpret and record Bach ... Masses ( ) to get stuck into here - contributions are from JE Gardiner, John Butt, Rachel Podger, Masaaki Suzuki and Angela Hewitt. www.gramophone.co.uk/classical-music-news/gramophone-focus-recording-bach-todayInteresting to see that Gardiner has had a second go at the B minor, 30 years after his first recording. There's also a top 50 Bach recordings here ...

Ah, yes, interesting that JEG has had another crack at the B minor mass. I shall give that and quite a few others in the "Top 50" a go. Not impressed with some of their choices, I have to say! -- solo violin sonatas & partitas and accompanied violin sonatas come to mind especially. Shame that John Butt is on the Linn label and so not on Spotify.
The choices in the Top 50 seem overly restrictive to big names - Perahia, Gardiner, Hewitt, Suzuki etal come up again and again - as shown with the B minor, "lesser" is often better imo.

JEG B-minor #2 - Meh - as ever, for me, JEG comes over as a control freak. He doesn't allow the music to breath naturally.
Of course, all great conductors are control freaks - that's the job description - but they shouldn't sound like it!

LOL I don't take those recommended recordings list too seriously - you never know what agendas (if any) are at play ...

The best performances of Bach I have heard by a long way were both at the Proms - Alina Ibragimova playing the complete Sonatas and Partitas over two nights and Yo-Yo Ma playing the six cello suites. Different styles of Bach but both just pure bliss.

I like JEG's first interpretation, it works for me.
The Murray Perahia performance of the Goldberg Variations is a bit special.
