Yello - Flag
I remember the first time I heard The Race was at a hi-fi show at the Penta hotel on an Audio Innovations valve system. It sounded awesome, not only for the great music but also for the incredibly dynamic sound and vivid stage they had achieved. This was truly a demonstration disc that has stood the test of time, musically. I love it all, from their mad monotonic and processed vocal delivery to the huge detail and attention to production - all this in 1988. Oh, by the way, the dynamics are stupendous and the bass is quite something, too. Mostly, it's about electronic music made with fun and not a little skill from a pair of Swiss loons of the best kind.
Start with Tied Up as it contains the best of their style and work up to The Race, but make sure you play it LOUD. It's worth it!
This is a release where the original vinyl pressing is much better sounding than the CD, so scour the charity shops and pick yourself up a copy.
For further listening, try Touch and Toy, both superb albums, too.

For me it's their best album. It gets automatic top marks. I have fond memories of my son, pre walking, lying on his back and wriggling about, dancing to it.

Great record for showing off the Hi-Fi , I've heard The Race so many times I hate it although I wasn't that struck on it in the first place . I know Yello have a massive following , very popular at Scalford Hall btw , I don't particularly like them , they are ok in short bursts 2/5.

Martin, you are absolutely right about the vinyl being superior to the CD release. My original album release from 1988 (Mercury - German pressing) sounds dynamic and rich in bass. I also have the CD, which is cut at a much lower level, minus the dynamic range and stentorian bass of the LP.

I can take it or leave it. My son had it and I got sick of hearing it blaring from his bedroom. As someone said though, it's a great workout for your hifi.

An update: this album sounds superb on Qobuz streamed at 16/44 so the CD was an anomaly.
Tied Up and The Race would test anyone's system and are creatively superb.
