An interesting and likeable guy. I like his playing and have a few of his albums. Most of them essential additions to anyone's collection. Listening to him on a R3 programme Jazz Lineup from October (!) so may not be on BBC iPlayer now. He had a musical start in life, playing around then learning piano. Classical to start until he discovered soul music and later even more. He says Bach is at the beginning of everything, which I found interesting. He finds Zappa a great influence and is full of praise for him and his music. Despite Chris persuading and me trying hard I can't seem to get Zappa. Played the track Zut Alors which I heard differently this time around - you can certainly tell where Steve Vai gets influences from. i recommend grabbing some Neil Cowley albums and maybe having another go at Zappa Jazz line up sounds pretty good too. Thank you TiVo for logging keywords and recording this and other usual treats

He says Bach is at the beginning of everything, which I found interesting. I agree with that - not in some poncified classical-is-best manner, but the more I listen to Bach the more I hear his influences in much else that I listen to. I am but a novice on Bach, with so much yet to discover, but I find myself deeply drawn to his mathematical yet hugely complex intertwining lines and very rewarding melodies.

He mentioned Bach's mathematical prowess amongst other things.
Loved his comment "be your own patron" - So he does session work for pop groups to pay so he can also do his own thing. Called in for one session where the keyboard guy bailed, going back to his job in a supermarket as he saw no future in the band. This band was Adele..... From the first Adele album he has a group of chords used for failure in The Voice (or that sort of programme)

I've been a fan of Neil Cowley's since you introduced me to him Mike, excellent.
