A whim of the moment entry. Pictures at an Exhibition - the original music for solo piano by Mussorgsky. Quite bowled over by this particular recording, I only came across it this afternoon while trying various recordings of Pictures. ... Byron Janis on the audiophile-approved RCA Living Stereo label. (It's also available on Mercury Living Presence) Mind boggling playing - not just the cosmic dynamics, the sheer eye-popping power, but the delicacy of phrasing, too. Magical. A great recording in all ways. ... and Jules, you can get it on vinyl

I don't own that version, is it OK if I play the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer version instead Jerry?

The orchestral version was the first piece of classical vinyl I ever bought.

...it was my third (after The Four Seasons and The Planets).
This is very well played, it's easy to forget that it was written for piano. 4/5 only because the Ravel orchestration is simply masterful.

LIstening and enjoying now.
Great to see that Mr Janis is still going strong at 88 and I also read that Martin Scorsese has been developing a documentary about his life -that should be one to watch!

Top score from me - that's an easy decision ... wonderfully vivid playing, so full of life ...

I would like this on vinyl Jerry - can only find a pricey Speakers Corner double LP with the orchestral version as well...

I would like this on vinyl Jerry - can only find a pricey Speakers Corner double LP with the orchestral version as well... I'm sure you are better at chasing LPs than me, but a quick search elicited just a £40 double that you probably found. Zilch on ebay, current or completed. I'm surprised it's so rare. Sorry about that. Ye gods, even the CD version is ridiculously expensive! -- although one was available on ebay recently for under £7. Set up a search on CamelCamel. You'll have to hook up Spotify to your main rig,
