Are there any vintage/classic cabasse speakers worth looking out for? Being another Fren h make, I may be able to source a pair reasonably cheap but I don't know which ones are particularly good.

I remember a system containing a big pair of Cabasse speakers with a kind of stepped baffle arrangement sounding very good - the name Galion (or Gallion) seems to be in my mind. I think there was a 12" woofer but can remember for sure that it was a 4 way. The system sounded good but I don't know how much of that was don to the speakers.

I have seen the Galion for sale. Not cheap, but they certainly have a large woofer.

Look for Triangle speakers, too. I've heard some nice sounding models at shows.

Not French, but Belgian, so not so very far away in provenance: Look out for a pair of Etude Rhea speakers. Very nice indeed.
