I like a good Rioja and have been given some great ones of late, but I've always forgotten to make a note of them. I find I prefer the young fruity ones compared with the older Crianzas and Reservas that can be a little heavy and tannin-laden.
What would you recommend I try?

Martin, if you enjoy fruit driven 'modern' style Rioja there are a list of producers here to look out for -
1. Artadi 2. Finca Allende 3. Fernando Remírez de Ganuza 4. Benjamín Romeo 5. Roda 6. Eguren Family (Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente, Páganos) 7. Dinastía Vivanco 8. Luis Cañas 9. Ostatu 10. Contino
Also, my personal recommendation would be to try and find a good bottle of La Rioja Alta - this is a traditional Rioja which produces an immensely elegant wine which shouldn't be too heavy at all if it's a good one ...

Count me out. White wine just tastes like rotten grapes to me and red tastes like pimped up vinegar. Not my thing but good luck those who enjoy the stuff. Best I can say is that it's not as foul as spirits,

The title of this thread seems to indicate that there's such a thing as a bad Rioja. You'll be telling me that there are bad Chiantis next.

I've opened more good Riojas than bad, but some have been a little questionable. It remains one of my favourite wines.
Ruth likes Merlots, but I find them even more variable. Now, Sicilian reds I find almost always very nice.

Thanks, Jules. I shall see what my local emporiums can offer from that list.

White rioja is very good as well, under-appreciated IMO.
Another excellent white is gavi di gavi.
My red of choice would be malbec.
