Were any of you here part of the Rock Grotto frenzy a few years ago regarding these phones? It was said that these were made by the same factory that made/make AKG. I have 2 pairs that I modded along with other members on RG. I dug them out the other day. Not bad for the £15 or thereabouts I paid at the time. One of my favourite phones are Goldring DR150s (modded of course ) I assume that someone else made them for Goldring, but may be wrong. I also have some Sennheiser 595s and Grado SR60s....oh and some others.....prob in the loft. Has anyone made a C-Moy h/phone amp? I made a couple some years ago for not much money. There was much made at the time that the Grado H/P amp was merely an op-amp based C-Moy in a fancy box that cost a fortune.

I like my Superlux 668Bs for not much more money. The only mod required was removing the felt-like protectors from inside the earpieces. I am not a great headphone user and they sound great to me.

I have a set of Superlux 681 Evo, which precluded the need to mod them. I thought they were very good value for money, at around £28.00 shipped. They ousted the Goldring DR150s I picked up from Richer Sounds for £20.00.
I did not like the Sennheiser HD650s I borrowed from a friend for a while, which saved me forking out to try them. Some folk call the HD650s warm and cuddly - I call them opaque and woolly. I much preferred the Goldring DR150s, which I would describe as warm and cuddly.
I got on OK with the Sennheiser 560s another friend lent me, although they're a bit cool in the midband.
My current go to cans are AKG K702s, and they're the best of those I've tried by quite a margin.
All the cans were used in conjunction with my Graham Slee Solo SRG II/PSU1.

If anyone's interested you can still get what looks like a good range of Superlux cans dirt cheap at Thomann where they're classed as "studio headphones."

My favourite 'phones are B&O H6. I got them "almost new" from a private eBay seller. They had an hour or so on them at most - and I could hear why the seller got rid of them. Very thin sounding with literally no bass - I use a pre with tone controls and I whacked the bass up by 10dB - no difference at all, there was simply no bass to be boosted. I was a bit peed off, but just left them running for 24 hours covered in blankets so as not to be distracting. Major improvement - another 48 hours and they were quite listenable. Now with 100 hours+ and they sound superb. Very comfortable as well.

I was always been sceptical about "running in" and "burning in" and that over time you just got used to what you were hearing, but in relation to drive units it seems they benefit from being given some welly.

There are very few B&O products that I like the look of, but those phones are beautiful Jerry.

Yes, there's an elegant simplicity to them that seems pretty much a perfect example of form follows function. It was the looks that first drew me to them. I must admit, though, I am also a big fan of some of the electronics, like the amp recently acquired and shown in my system blog.

Were the phones that got modded with bits of aluminium on the side Rob? If so, yes, I still have them. They have lovely velour earmuffs, a leather strap, replacement cable as well as the aluminium additions. Haven't used them for years as the cable needs re-soldering. Sound -wise ok but I used to fall asleep with them on because they were so comfy.

Yes, I in fact won a pair on RG modded by the guy who made the aluminium rings. Having had to rebuild both my pairs due to the cable parting company on one cup or the other, I can't see that due to the construction that original plastic or aluminium would make any difference to the rigidity. As I had to take them all apart I put a cable in each earpiece. As I said above my daily cans are Goldring DR150s. You keeping well? Is your Lightspeed still working?

No, don't know what I did with the Lightspeed, if I remember correctly I got a problem with channel balance and just put it to one side. I have experimented with a few different pre's but always seem to come back to using the one in my dac-now Stan's latest and greatest.
