I nearly bought a pair years ago, thought they were good at the time With all speakers good to hear them in your room and gear but as long as your room not small you should be okay

The S9e was a very good speaker I thought, especially bi-amped with a fairly powerful pair of power amps. The previous one (S9) wasn't bad either, but not quite as well integrated.
I'd say any S series Spendor except the S5*, would be a good musical companion for not much money now. They need a lively system in which to thrive and used to like Naim amps and Chord Odyssey cable I recall. the 'e' versions had a slightly leaner bass to mid balance, enabling the speakers to work in smaller rooms closer to a wall. I loved them hugely and they were superbly and solidly put together when new.
The S5 models were difficult to position and actually in our dem room had best bass to mid balance pushed tight to our back wall, unlike the others which liked a few inches breathing space.
P.S. The modern A and D series look crap in pictures, but in the flesh are superbly presented and just as solid as the S models were. I suspect the simpler styling was a cost/profit feature and compared to the other confections the current major shareholder distributes, Spendor is now very low rent. His dealership (Criterion Audio in Cambridge) makes Coherent Audio look like Richer Sounds in comparison I think..

Hi dsjr, Thanks for the detailed response, much appreciated. Any new additon would replace my Mission 752 Freedoms which I have had many years and find hard to let go. They just get better with every upgrade and bring me a lot of pleasure. Non fatiguing, detailed, great and natural in the mids etc BUT.. I sense having toyed with the idea of replacing them on and off over the years that the right Spendors would be a genuine upgrade in fairly much the same vain as the 752 Freedoms.
If a pair of S9e's or S8e's came up at the right price I'd be very tempted (I'm looking for a bargain ) as I dont have equivalent speaker money. Cable is QED Silver Spiral which is great in my set up. I dont think the Chord Odyssey would be an upgrade as such so I'd probably leave things as they are there initially.
Yes, I've heard and read good things about the current Spendor D7's but way out of my price range.
Amp is Sansui AU 919 so plenty of clean power. Main source - heavily modded Technics SL 1210 MK5g with Ortofon Quintet Black mc. Other source - Pioneer PD91 cdp.
Music - Mainly classic 70's / 80's soul and reggae - Bill Withers, Billy Paul, Stevie, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Lou Rawls, Marvin, Roy Ayres, Little Beaver, Aretha Franklin, Esther Phillips, Roberta Flack, Steely Dan / Donald Fagen.... Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Freddie Mcgregor, Gregory Isaacs, Black Uhuru etc etc

Rob dude - you've just gotta buy some since you've been wanting to try them for so long now! Too long for my liking bro funds and only funds have stopped me taking the plunge as yet. I've spent a fair bit, one upgrade after the other as you know. Nearly there though as i've finished paying up on the Paul Hynes external SR7 psu and his triple stage regulator modules - the final piece in my Techie upgrade journey - yippeee!! It's been years of changes and upgrades but cant be much longer now before I bag a pair of nice Spennies - I'm a patient man, I've had to be
