Disaster has struck! Well ok then, a minor inconvenience...
The relay for the underfloor heating in my music room has failed and buzzes loudly while sounding like it's arcing. Researching the suspect unit (an IMO HC20-20 20A contactor) reveals a switching life of 106 switches. Estimating the number of switches per hour/day/year comes to a remarkably accurate 10 years, about when this annex was converted from a garage. So it did its expected job, really. I've found one on eBay which arrives next week. Now to see if I have an emergency fan heater lying around.

It would be a good time to switch to valves!

Worth thinking about panels on the roof and a battery ?

I'd like to bet that roof panels need attention more often than once in 10 years, Mike.

It would be a good time to switch to valves! Umm... why?

To replace the dicky heating system, of course.

Ah, I see I did leave the system on, but no chance. Room staying resolutely at 10C.

I can do that, but the speakers still suffer at that temperature and don't sound as good. Not bad, but my steamy breath may have got in the way.
EDIT: going to Homebase tomorrow to buy a cheap heater!

Probably too late now...
How about an electric oil filled radiator ? Could be on a timer

Bought a cheap fan heater. Had a listen tonight, not bad but the noise was a little distracting. Took a surprisingly long time to warm up the room.
I'm getting to like underfloor heating, it works well even if the response time is slow. Will dismantle the old relay to see what is wrong with it.

Underfloor must be the best going although I've never had it, thanks to builders saying they coudl not do it when refurbed Some sort of radiator is better than a fan heater, fine in desperation Could be your heat is going up. A fan might bring it down again. Used in warehouses and in my last unit to great effect

Underfloor heating is great indeed.

Underfloor heating is great indeed. I assumed so. Another of my many gripes with the builders we had. Can you sensibly put a carpet on top ?

We had underfloor heating which was great when it worked ... The carpet was nice and warm! Unfortunately it was pretty old and a bugger to repair so we ended up getting gas central heating.
I'm sure modern underfloor heating is a different class ...

We have the pumped water type under the slate tiles on the ground floor and electric underfloor heating in the upstairs bathrooms and music room.

How much juice does the electric take ?
I assume any electric heat will cost

The music room is on a 20A circuit. Underfloor heating seems pretty efficient and the cycling is infrequent so I don't think it uses more energy than other fuels. However, hold that thought as I will have a better idea when our first quarterly bills come through.
