Been after a Submariner for some time, 2nd hand prices are ridiculous & would prefer a new one anyway but there are waiting lists. Just back from Aruba where I thought I might find one but no luck (bought the Panerai by way of a 'substitute'). Other half saw one in a jewellers in Tenerife when she went in May for around 7000 euros, she asked me if I wanted her to get it for me & I said no, regretted that ever since but, as they say, you snooze you lose.

I have to confess to a new horological indulgence. A while back I saw a Tissot that I really liked the look of. Tried one on at duty-free, was really taken with it but the price wasn’t competitive. So fast forward and I saw an online deal that I couldn’t say no to - a special promotion which meant I effectively got two discounts. On top of that I bagged 12 months interest free credit - nice. It's a Tissot Ballade Powermatic 80 and I absolutely love it. It’s really beautifully made and is a COSC certified chronometer, far superior in performance to an expensive Omega I had a few years back; it also has a whopping 80 hour power reserve that actually made it to 82 hours on my test. Only thing to sort out is a new strap as this one is a bit short and not very comfortable. Also I’m not sure deployment clasps are for me …

My battery is a five year one and I still get irritated when it runs down - like now, where it's indicating low battery. Doesn't help that it's got to be sent away for two weeks to have it done. Amazingly, my Longines lasted until last week on the low battery warning! It finally died and I took it to Goldsmiths to have it sent away for battery replacement and re-sealing. They quoted £70 and 3-5 weeks. I miss having it on my wrist.

That looks like the sort of thing you'd buy if you've got the odd million quid knocking around and you've already bought everything else in the world. Fugly as Hell.

I would prefer to wear an 'Al Qaeda' Casio than that abomination.

I'll stick with my brilliantly readable, and reliable day-to-day Lorus. It's taken me years, but I think I've finally found my "perfect" watch, bearing in mind all I want is something that tells the time, rather than "says who I am," or how much is in my wallet, which is usually not a lot.

My perfect watch remains the one in the o/p.

Martin, I've been looking at the latest Longines VHP range - they are accurate to within something like 5 secs per year, which is quite a feat of engineering.

Congrats, Roy!
I think that design is about as timeless as you can get. Much prefer it without the date.
Thankfully Rolex haven't messed around with it too much, unlike the Explorer ...

If anyone needs a new watch strap, I can thoroughly recommend Steve at www.steveostraps.com/I've just received my second hand-made strap - the quality is absolutely fantastic; I could smell the leather before I even got it out of its wrapping! Prices are *extremely* reasonable for what you get - it would be easy to spend more than double elsewhere and as they are all made to measure you are going to get a perfect fit.
