I like automatic gearboxes, but it seems the torque converter is becoming obsolete on small/medium cars these days.
Double clutch gearboxes seem de rigueur now, but I have reservations on these compared with torque converter equipped autos.
Can anyone who has got practical experience with double clutch gearboxes tell me how they are with slow speed maneuvering and situations like traffic jams. Does the 1st and reverse clutch give the same "feel" as a torque converter ?

It seems that "creeping" in traffic, or slow speed maneuvering, is not good for the clutches (wet or dry) on double clutch gearboxes.
There are many and various tales of woe on the net about customers having warranty replacements and wondering how much it would cost when the warranty runs out.
So, as replacement for a manual box they have merits, but give me a proper torque converter every day.
PS It seems Honda have got a double clutch gearbox WITH a torque converter as well on some model or other.

Having had a string of autos, I took the decision to go back to a manual. I'm glad I did as it encourages me to drive more precisely.

Never mind how they perform, it's the sound quality that's important.

Oh well, mine sounds fab (and a bit loud, as my partner keeps saying)...
We're still talking about cars, are we?

Surely even a post war car (50s - 60s) is "modern" compared to a proper veteran car, so what in your mind constitutes a "modern" car compared to "old" cars ?

Will ALL be gearboxless soon Indeed, electric motors don't need gearboxes.

Will ALL be gearboxless soon Indeed, electric motors don't need gearboxes. Indeed. The current crop of Formula E have been trying various 2/3 speed boxes but one team at least its using no box and that has efficiency gains. It seems to be horses for courses on overall speed. Perhaps some uses, as towing or a tractor might need a box, but perhaps not, choice of motor(s) perhaps?

choice of motor(s) perhaps? Or perhaps the system that the Underground trains use, with series/shunt field coil switching for starting torque followed by speed.

Instantaneous torque oh yes, recently drove a Telsa the other day, getting close to my bike up to 85 Mph smooth elastic band type power think milk float powered by the Hulk As for G/boxes, a quality auto is good as is a nice slick sequential box, though road cars different story. Personal experience a well sorted manual gives the sort of old school feedback, I remember racing the old 2002 turbo's and Intergrale' Evo 3 still puts smile on my face thinking about it now. Conversely a paddle shift is difficult to really get right in terms of ultimate uber fast smooth shifting both up and down, Aston Martin any one These days unless its my van or bike then auto is my default choice far to much cog swapping in towns. Friend of mine has just bought an Atom Ariel that's fun for an hour, but music and a warm environment are far more appealing these days, damn it even me van has a toasty heater

I loved my BMW auto box, and autos work best with torquey engines. Endless wall of grunt, for sure. But, as I said earlier, it makes you lazy.
I agree with Tony: a well sorted manual with smooth clutch is a joy to drive.
