December 2016 - Ivana Gavrić - In The MistsThis is one of the albums that I bought from our very own Jandl100 (Jerry) recently in an attempt to try out Classical some more as I have never really explored this ridiculously large genre. I instantly liked this album. I am a very big fan of the Piano as an instrument and the quality and skill involved in this album is amazing but also I like the music too. Let's see what you all think. Spotify: Wiki: Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a link to the album, but there is one for Ivana Gavrić, so I have posted that below. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivana_Gavrić

Nice album - and the money for it went to charity, not me. An excellent off-beat start with a Janacek work. Quite an unusual soundworld, not a usual mainstream piano work. Maybe it's her east European background, but Gavric hits the eastern, a-rhythmic hesitations to the musical flow spot-on. A lovely, unusual work which grows on me with repeated listening. 10/10 The Schubert D.784 sonata, which is one of my favourite piano works, is good here but lacks a little in poetry and emotional depth. A very good intro to the piece, though. Use it as a launch pad for listening to more recordings of the piece! 7/10 I have yet to get "in" to Liszt and Rachmaninov solo piano music -- I've only been trying for the last 40 years! -- so no comment to make on those except that they continue to baffle me somewhat. Overall 8/10 for me. Nice album.

In the Mists is a very poignant title and work indeed - Janacek had lost his daughter and was getting his opera scores knocked back...
I will be playing the first part of this to my son who is just learning 'phrasing' in piano ie not just playing the notes, but how to make them come alive and tell a story, by speeding up time, slowing it down, and stopping time. I think this is exquisitely judged in this work and will be looking to hear this pianist in concert.

The start of the Janáček could be subtitled "pianist wanders off in search of a tune" as far as I'm concerned. The good news is that by the Presto movement she's almost found it. The rest of the album I like, especially the Rachmaninov. Spotify has it wrong by the way, that Schubert sonata is in A minor, not D minor. 7/10 for me.

Gosh, Jerry drops Wednesday bombshell! I wouldn't be without my Rach piano lps - got most of them with Ashkenazy on the keys ... I'll try and dig out one of my favourite short pieces and see what you make of it, but you've probably heard them all!

I was dithering between an 8 or 9 score - chose 9 as it makes for a nice pattern on the chart ....
