... or Sunningdale if you're being pedantic.
Still softair@cix so bump into MartinT very occasionally.
Am intrigued by how it now seems possible to build your own digital streamers to good effect and am thinking of going down that route myself. Will do a little more research and see how we go.

Ascot or Sunningdale - doesn't matter, they're both lovely places, at least they were the last time I visited in the 70's!
What kind of gear are you running at the moment Bob?

Hi Bob and welcome to TAS! Did you know I work in Ascot? Have a look around and ask any questions you like. I'm still mtaylor on CIX but I think its best days are gone now. Still hanging in there, though

Hi Bob - Are you referring to Raspberry Pi type streamers or something more exotic? If it's the latter, then hopefully you'll have seen our build guide?

Thanks for various welcomes! MartinT: your CIX resumé says that you do - which one? MikeMusic - I get told off if I turn the volume up too much ;-) ChrisB: Raspberry Pi I think, but will do some digging and put my thoughts in order elsewhere in due course.
I'm afraid I don't really regard HifI as a hobby in itself. Some few years ago now (2001-ish) I was in a position to actually get something half decent, listened around quite a bit and ended up with a Linn system: Ikemi player/Kolektor/LK140 amp/Ninka speakers. Wasn't struck by Naim and the other stuff I heard, and the Meridian active speaker system I fell in love with was twice the price and out of the question.
I listen mainly to folk/acoustic music and oocasionally classical, and have been reviewing albums for fRoots/Folk Roots/Southern Rag for [cue Rambling Sid Rumpo] Thirty Foive Years or more so have accumulated quite a few albums along the way. Things have changed remarkably now, but back then the recording/production quality of British folk music was somewhat variable, and the Linn setup just seemed to bring out the music better than some of the others. Maybe "less is more", I don't know.
Anyway, over the years, quite a few recording musician friends have listened and liked, and sometimes come round with new stuff to listen to. I've had the privilige of several artists singing in my living room, and can compare the recording with the real thing, and the Linn setup suits me so I've never really looked to "improve" matters. Too much music to listen to I guess!
[I'm the same with guitars. Unlike many friends who suffer severley from G.A.S., I was lucky enough to get one made for me that plays just right for me, sounds superb (according to numerous sound guys) and is coveted by several friends. Never felt the need to look elsewhere!]
Along the way I acquired a couple of SqueezeBoxes that sound pretty much as good as the Ikemi on accurately ripped CDs: as I get older I'm not entirely sure I can tell the difference. And an old friend who upgraded his system donated his outgoing Rega 3 so I can have an excuse to dig out all the vinyl from the garage if only to record it onto a hard drive. No idea what cartridge is fitted, but it sounds just fine to me.
That's enough for now! Dinner calls...
Bob

And a quick PS: although I'm not particularly looking to upgrade, the Ninkas are capable of, and cabled up, for bi-amping; if I could lay my hands on a second hand LK140 at a reasonable price, I would be interested to hear the difference...

Agreed. The kit is only the enabler to get more out of the music. Just have to get into the kit. When I first heard Martin's system as was I was shocked it delivered so much more than mine. Rather teed off so I set out on the upgrade trail. The system I now have delivers so much more music I am delighted. Few months ago I played and kept on playing Fairport Convention's Full House and then listened again to the later albums I had previously thought average at best, rather taken and bought a load. Some albums really fill out beautifully in response to a good system.

Well, as long as you're delighted ;-)
I have for some time wondered whether I should listen to some seriously good kit before my hearing goes, but suspect I may come to regret it. Perhaps I should just regard it as a scientific experiment!
Anyway, the database says I've got a Full House CD: will have to give it a whirl.

I am
Full House took me by surprise. An album I know that became even better when played on the much upgraded system. Lots going on and lovely detail
