December 2016 - Robbie Robertson - Storyville (1991)I was quite recently introduced to Robbie Robertson by a fellow Hifi fan who recommended the album 'Music For The Native Americans', which I liked straight away. As I hadn't heard of him before this encounter, I thought I would see other albums via Spotify initially, but then because I liked them so much I have bought them all. Storyville is for me his best album. It is a Soft Rock with excellent guitar work and an incredible array of talent on this album, ex co members of The Band, Neil Young, the Neville brothers and Peter Gabriel. For me this album is the perfect cross between Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel styles with superb tunes... just my cup a' tea! Wiki:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storyville_(album)Spotify:

Nice choice, I'm listening to it now on the PC system.

I's a fine album, but the slant isn't quite to my taste. I far prefer his S/T album as it generates quite an unusual and unique atmosphere and some tracks like Somewhere Down the Crazy River are simply epic. 7/10.

I see where you're coming from with the Paul Simon/Peter Gabriel comment. It had never crossed my mind before but now I can hear it in a few of the tracks. Try and hear his first (eponymous) solo album, released 4 years prior to this one, that Martin has recommended. I agree, I think you'll definitely like that too. 8/10 from me.

I played his S/T album again right through. It really is in a different class, a superb 10/10 production.

I'm afraid I do not like this at all , I also played his self titled album and I don't like that either . Not sure what it is , too much production , Brian Adams-ey , his voice reminds me of Rickie Ross of Deacon Blue (although I quite like them ). Its just too American , lounge , nightclub , Hall and Oats-ey for me.

Playing this now, but I'm only on the second track, so no real impressions yet, other than the feel is very like his first album. I bought that one on the day it was released back in 198-whatever it was-9 maybe due to my love of music of The Band. I quite liked it but wasn't blown away, hence my not buying this one at the time. Then I read Levon Helm's autobiography and my view of Robbie Robertson, the person, changed completely. That's not to say that he's not capable of making decent music of course!

A 4 for me It has this mid 80s feel Paul Simons Hall and Oats etc which is just a bit to polite for me The music is well produced with good sound quality but that bit of touching something deep inside it just does not do this for me Sorry

Seems there is a small something missing I can't quite put my finger on Drums that sound like a real drumkit! The recording is very much of its time and suffers for it, I think.

Just listened on Spotify, I voted 7. I enjoy this kind of music but feel it's a bit lightweight and doesn't have enough edge or sophistication to warrant a higher score. I'm a fan of The Band, so it was interesting to give this a try.
I'm not paying for high quality streaming any more so it's difficult for me to comment on the quality of the recording. Would like to have a copy on vinyl, I suspect I would enjoy it more.
