Is it really worth the hassle of trying to find them, pay the price asked and wonder if they really are what is claimed, and not counterfeit, or just use an alternative?
Looking for 2SC1116A/2SA747A output pairs which were commonly used in amps in the '70s and not to be found now.

Go for modern replacements, but change the whole set so they all match.
Buying electronics on Ebay can be a lottery re counterfeit parts.

Aye 'T03' are proper Transistors.. I replaced the Output transistors in both my Quad '303' & Ferrograph 'F307' with modern equivalent.. Improvement was had on both accounts.

Improvements? In what sense?

I was referin' ter Technical Improvements not sound wise.
Not a fan of Silicon Transistors, prefer the sound of Germanium.

TO3 refers to the case design. Some of the best TO3 power transistors I ever used are BDY56 from the Linsley-Hood 75W design. Virtually bomb-proof trannies with good performance in a quasi-complimentary circuit.

I would never dream of farting about like this these days..

Was it worth the effort? I have a NAD 3030 (2, actually,) with 2N3055s on the output, the same as the 3020. And yet on the circuit in the service manual it shows a MJ complementary pair.

Yes cos there is no need for Quazi anymore.

Indeed, PNP transistors can now be made with the same current handling as NPN, which didn't used to be the case.
I know you could get MJ3055 which were the NPN in a TO3P package. MJ2955 would have been the PNP equivalent (from memory).
