OK - after the resounding success of my George Crumb submission, beloved by all, I thought I would challenge you by going from the sublime to the ridiculous. So, you lot want tunes, eh? Right! - they don't get a lot more tuneful than the music presented here. Utterly gorgeous - beautiful, exciting and soulful by turns. If you don't like this, I bloody well give up. The Piano Quintet #2 Opus 81 by the composer of the New World Symphony. He did other good stuff apart from writing the music for that Hovis advert. Loads of recordings of it. Dvorak was Czech, so here's a recording by Czech musicians, they should have a good handle on what it's all about. The piece starts at track 4 on this recording. And a start-studded cast play it here on YouTube - a superb performance, actually.

I played the Emerson String Quartet/Menahem Pressler version on DG, 'cos that's the version I have. It's stately, raucous, sweet, rip-snorting, quiet, loud, in fact it's "got it all" as far as I can see. I took a peep at sheet music, and it's marked with the tempo Allegro Ma Non Troppo which is pretty much Fast, but not too fast. There were definitely places where the Emersons decided to forget about the Ma Non Troppo part. Starts with a Cello, and ends with a proper classical 'Tum-Te-Tum' who could want for more from a piano quintet?

Finally got a moment to enjoy this - I do like a bit of Dvorak and will be hunting down a suitable vinyl copy of this. It is sumptuous, glorious indeed.
My estimable Penguin Guide recommends Clifford Curzon with Vienna Phil Quartet on Decca. The original SXL is rather pricey so I will get the Ace of Diamonds re-release which 'has lost none of the richness and glow of the original recording, which was one of Decca's very best.'
