George Crumb Look him up. OK - I'll help -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Crumb"George Crumb (born October 24, 1929) is an American composer of avant-garde music. He is noted as an explorer of unusual timbres, alternative forms of notation, and extended instrumental and vocal techniques." His music is well, errr, a bit strange. But I find it fascinating. And enjoyable. Try this album. I particularly like the Gnomic Variations, but I find it all fascinating. Lux Aeterna is missing from the Spotify album for some reason. Ah well. The music is also on Youtube

Well, I like to think that I have an open mind and I did start listening to this with one. However, the incessant and directionless noodlings have left me cold. I would be so disappointed if I bought tickets for a concert of this music!
Sorry Jerry, I really can't find anything positive to say so best leave it at that!

Did you try the Gnomic Variations for piano? I was bowled over (in a nice way!) by that. I find it hugely powerful and mesmerising.

Nope. Not for me I'm afraid. As far as I'm concerned the words avant and garde should not appear in the same sentence when referring to 'classical' music. I've tried dipping in to some of his other albums, just in case it was that particular example of his work that I found wanting (wanting a bloody good tune that is) but no, as I said, not for me. At least "5. Ghost-Nocturne: for the Druids of Stonehenge (Night-spell II). Virgo" from his Makrokosmos II part II made me laugh out loud. It sounds a bit like something Gong might have discarded for being too weird.

I did, but I'll give them another go tomorrow. Wait until you have got your Big Rig up and going, Martin, then play the Gnomic Variations a tad on the loud side. Blows me away.

Damn, you've disappointed me, Paul I was hoping for a clean sweep of Yuks. I dunno, TASers are so unadventurous. I'll do the Four Seasons next time.

It sounds a bit like something Gong might have discarded for being too weird. Several pianos and things being attacked by a human-cat? Simply horrible.

Had a listen last night and thought I was being over critical so had another listen this morning . Sounds OK with the volume at zero . Sorry Jerry I just started Spotify premium a couple of weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it . Lets me get access to huge amounts of new music . What recommendations have you got for classical ?

What recommendations have you got for classical ? George Crumb ___________________ Yeah, I know, guys. I used to think EXACTLY the same as you about this type of avant garde 'music'. Maybe it's early onset Alzheimer's, but I really dig some of this stuff now. Listening as I type to this, and enjoying it ..... No, not as extreme as Crumb, but not exactly full of sweeping melody, either. Tunes are overrated.

What recommendations have you got for classical ? OK. For someone barely setting out in the classical genre, I think one of the best and easiest ways in is via the Disney 'film' Fantasia 2000. Full Disney visuals (which make it easy to take in, so no real chance of dozing off with unfamiliar material that takes time to grow on you) linked up with some wonderful classical music (strangely, they missed out George Crumb) - a wide range from Beethoven and Elgar to Stravinsky, Gershwin and Shostakovich.. I don't know if it's on Netflix. Buy the DVD.

It's a tad rough sounding now, but a great introduction as Jerry says.
Some of the Classic FM compilations make a good starter into the field, too.

I just started Spotify premium a couple of weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it . Lets me get access to huge amounts of new music . Yes, it's wonderful, isn't it. Totally revolutionised my listening habits - and introduced me to George Crumb. What more could I ask for? It's so easy to be adventurous. There are 79 different recordings of Vivaldi's 4 seasons to explore *. Whoopeee! * I made that up. But there probably are.

It's a tad rough sounding now, but a great introduction as Jerry says. No, not the original Fantasia from the 1940s, if that's what you meant - the Fantasia 2000 remake from err 2000 (with different music and James Levine conducting instead of Leopold Stokowski who was indisposed due to being dead)

I like being able to investigate suggestions for artists made by people like your good self and I've saved quite a few of them .

Some of the Classic FM compilations make a good starter into the field, too. That's a really good call Martin, no idea about sound quality and all that but in terms of music would be a really good starter

It’s good to try something outside of your comfort zone now and again so thanks to Jerry for this …
Initially I was voting ‘not for me’ though I’m now moving up to the heady heights of ‘ok’, somewhere between that and good.
It’s funny but I find the Echoes of Time curiously very dated (not sure when composed) and rather evocative of 60’s / 70’s sci-fi soundtrack music!
I would agree with Jerry on the Gnomic Variations - this has a bit more cohesion to me and slightly ‘easier’ to listen to. You need to be in the mood for this kind of music - sit back, close your eyes and try and clear your mind … I don’t know how it would fare with me in the concert hall.
