...and Other Stories.
First a quick note of explanation. I should have been choosing the December album, but there was a re-shuffle and I got bumped up to November. I recognised move this for exactly what it was, a dastardly plot to stop me choosing a Christmas album. No dice guys, it's Christmas in November here.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra are an American progressive rock band (that's how they describe themselves) who, amongst their other releases, have put out several "Christmas" themed albums.
This was, in fact, their debut album, the first instalment of their Christmas Trilogy, and was a 'rock opera' released in 1996. It remains among their best-selling albums and contains the instrumental "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" taken from Dead Winter Dead, a(nother) rock opera, about the Bosnian War, by Savatage, with whom Trans-Siberian Orchestra share a couple of members.
Considering you've probably never heard of them, Trans-Siberian Orchestra have sold over 10 million albums and the same number of concert tickets. Both Billboard Magazine and Pollstar have ranked them as one of the top ten ticket-selling bands in the first decade of the new millennium. Not bad for a band whose first mention probably got the response "who?" from most forum members reading this.
The Washington Post referred to them as "an arena-rock juggernaut" and described their music as "Pink Floyd meets Yes and The Who at Radio City Music Hall", but try not to let that put you off.
Their path to success was unusual in that Trans-Siberian Orchestra is the first major rock band to go straight to theatres and arenas, having never played at a club, never having an opening act and never being an opening act...oh, and they're also well known for their extensive charity work apparently.
Merry Christmas everyone. Let's rock.
After much buggering about I've cobbled together a quick audio player from the web and am temporarily hosting the audio files myself.
Click here for the audio tracks.
Sorry, I couldn't find this on Spotify.
