About three years ago , I can't remember what mag or site but it was somebody's Top Ten Albums of all time and it was like looking at my own Top Ten except for a band I'd never hear of ,Godspeed You! Black Emperor and this album , GSYB are a Canadian Post Rock band and F#A#oo was their first album . Released in 1997 on vinyl and then again in 1998 an expanded version on CD. It didn't kick in straight away , its a bit drawn out and requires time but on the first listen there was something that stuck in my mind to pursue it . That time came when I had the mind numbing task of painting a fence that was just short of the Great Wall of China, ipod on , album engaged , paint brush in hand and away we go, same again the next day and the next , then I couldn't wait to play it on the big rig. Its a very dark, apocalyptic album , great ambient melody and crescendos. If you haven't got a two mile fence to paint then listening in a 19th century opium den would do nicely There are a few different covers for the vinyl and CD versions

I've never heard anything by this band. Looking forward to hearing it. Just out of interest, what would be some of the albums in your and the other person's lists?

Just out of interest, what would be some of the albums in your and the other person's lists? Floyd , Genesis , Roger Waters , Deep Purple (Made In Japan) the usual suspects and it was weird seeing GSYBE in amongst them.

Great thanks, that give us a little perspective as to where you were coming from.

A dark minimalistic and intense listen I am quite liking this but feel it one of those albums that will take a few listens to get. In some ways it reminds me of the Dirty Three perhaps a bit more like you listening to a film score. I do not enjoy the voice overs yet. A strong 8 that might change after further listens. Thanks for sharing this.

Love the music, but like John I could do without the voiceovers, that won't wear well, I think, and I dislike it to start with! ... kind of embarrassing when the wife's listening in from the other room. She is apt to comment on such things. The music would be fine to stand on its own, imo. More Floydy than Deep Purple, but bluesy, too. A nice feel for musical developoment over each of the 3 long tracks. Very atmospheric and interestingly delicate at times. A great 8/10 without the voice-overs, but probably 6 with them for me. I'll give it more time, though.

I love the voice clips , its a thing I like about Roger Waters' albums. Yes it does require time I find most albums like this do. Jerry the Deep Purple/ Floyd etc comment I made was about people who like those bands like this album , from Top Ten album lists.

I've tried really hard but the narration stops it from being pure music for me. I love the atmospherics but there's less to get into than some of their contemporaries. More classical in construction, progressive and with some beautiful moments. I'm giving it a 6/10 for now but it might grow on me.

Quite like it but not all of it, so I am going with a 6/10.

I loved this on first play. I can cope with the dialogue, no problem at all. That, and the atmospheric feel really does make it sound very like a soundtrack but I won't hold that against them. I can imagine it being really good to listen to on a long night-time drive. This is an act I shall be investigating a bit more of, so thanks a lot Barry for the introduction.
8/10

I've got several of their albums, but didn't have this one. A solid 7 from me, and I like the voice-overs.

Since my first listen to this, it's remained on my Spotify list and I shall probably buy it in due course but I'd be grateful for any suggestions for further listening to the work of this lot. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? First off buy the CD. I've got both but the CD gives you the full experience. Below are their best ranked albums in order , F#A# oo is at no.2 , I like it best. I think with GSYB you get more out of them the more you put in , work down the list link
