I thought it was about time I wrote a few words in tribute to one of my all-time favourite violinists, Salvatore Accardo. He has enjoyed a very long and distinguished career as a performer and recording artist. Most recently he has enjoyed a string of releases on the superb Fone record label, often with Orchestra de Camera Italiana, which he also directs. Anyone who loves the violin, especially as a solo instrument should seriously consider the 'Homage to Fritz Kreisler' release which I have recently acquired. One of those discs you can just luxuriate in from start to finish! Just the purest artistry on display here and so effortless sounding in this entirely analogue recording that Fone specialise in. It is so refreshing to listen to music that isn't so obviously coloured like early Decca or late DG, to take the two extremes of the spectrum. I am only dissapointed in that I wished I had discovered Fone earlier, as they are strictly limited editions; once sold out you will be paying a lot of money to find one ... Accardo isn't one of those violinists who seek to dazzle you with superficial pyrotechnics. He just plays very honestly, musically, effortlessly, and from the heart to my ears. Salvatore, I salute you sir!

I've got him "doing" the Paganini concertos and doubling up with Anne Sophie Mutter on some Bach, both terrific. I'm surprised he has time to deliver groceries as well as playing the violin though.

Yes he was the first violinist to record all 6 Pag concertos - those are on my shopping list ... Wish he would re-record them on Fone though ... Damn - it took me a while to work out your groceries reference!!

Well the Paganini and Vivaldi will doubtless be superb - will be interesting to see how he handles the Elgar and Walton which couldn't be more different of course ... Here's a treat - you can listen to his recent recording of the Beethoven here with the Orchestra da Camera Italiana. This is the orchestra he founded to give more experience to younger musicians and alumni of the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona. foneshop.it/it/vinili-disponibili/18-vinile-salvatore-accardo-beethoven.html
