I'm a member of the TZ-UK watch forum, which is a well run forum IMO. One of the reasons it's so good is that they have a 'Bear Pit' sub-forum, where members can let off steam. Access to the Bear Pit is restricted to members with 250 posts and I think 6 months membership (it might be 3). This means that potentially offensive posts aren't visible to guests and new members. I would like to suggest that the mods create such a forum area so that when things get heated the discussion can move out of the general forum. It also encourages people to contribute to the forum. I think we would need to think long and hard about that, Lawrence. People can always stick their head out of their window and scream at the street, but do we want that happening here? It would require a suspension of our forum rules, too.

It would require a suspension of our forum rules, too. OK, no worries, I'd like the mods to give it some thought. TZ-UK gets over 3m page views per month and the public forum is pretty clear of the nasty stuff. People entering the Bear Pit do so at their own risk! I think if you are not going to ban people you might need a place for people to let off steam other than opening the window. Forums are spoiled by banning interesting members and heavy handed moderation IMO, and if you start banning people here then I suspect the forum will be poorer as a result. I'm delighted to see that so far the moderation has been light touch . Lawrence

Rather than encouraging letting off steam it is better to make it clear that the need to let off steam is to be discouraged. TAS isn't a watches forum though how you can be het up about a watch I fail to understand. Do they have subjectivists and objectivists too?

Alan, I'm sure watch fans would be amazed that anyone could fall out over a metre long length of copper wire. Isn't the human race a fascinating thing?

Hardly any of the arguments in TZ-UK are about watches, mainly its personalities and politics. I'm not sure if there's anything equivalent to cable threads, anyone trying to pass of a fake is given very short shrift however. There's a wide variety of approaches to watch collecting just as in the hifi world. Some people like to collect vintage watches and service them themselves, others go to the Rolex or Patek dealer and hand over 10 or 20k for the latest model. This is my most recent acquisition, bought second hand and in daily use. If you tell me you don't like it there could be trouble Lawrence EP_2 by losenotaminute, on Flickr EP_4 by losenotaminute, on Flickr

We've taken a vote on it and we are unanimous in not liking the idea. We don't relish having a board with different (relaxed) rules and think it would be an invitation for the worst excesses of behaviour.
We prefer one set of rules for all and complete transparency.
Love the watch, though!

No worries, thanks for the response. It was only a suggestion and I can understand your point of view.
