Do you have Ry Cooder's Borderline, Mike? Why Don't You Try Me is an awesome song, building up from a very quiet start with huge amounts going on. The shimmer of cymbals in this one is incredible, even more so because it's just standard red book resolution. The dynamics are knockout. It tells you a great deal about your system.

It's a great song, too, as is the Van Morrison.

Never heard this much before Last time I played it would appear to be Jan 2020 Big steps up
Most noticeable are the detail, width, change in tone even, working from this old memory I have a very long queue already of artists and albums I want to play

The 2020 remaster of this 1984 album is really good. The 24bit 96khz version provides the true vocal authenticity with the excellent technology of remastering today. The brass and strings are sweet throughout. Thanks for the suggestion

Yep, the 24/96 stream sounds quite superb.

Yep, the 24/96 stream sounds quite superb. Hi MartinT, I just noticed Van Morrison re-released a number of re-mastered albums in 2020. I have not had a chance to review them, but would be interested if you have reviewed any of them and your opinion on their re-mastering. Are any/all of them in the same league as the re-mastering on ‘A Sense of Wonder’? Thanks.

I would say that Moondance is good and Common One is outstanding, together with A Sense of Wonder. Astral Weeks didn't respond as well (probably not much can be done with that recording). I have yet to listen to others but, as you say, they're nearly all remastered in hi-res. What a gift!
His Band and the Street Choir is not yet in hi-res, but does sound excellent - try I'll Be Your Lover, Too.

I remarked elsewhere that I have a loan Mutec MC-3+ USB in my system. It's used for standards conversion from the ultraRendu's USB output to AES for the LKS DAC, as well as reclocking.
This one is stock whereas mine was already converted for 5V DC operation from one of my QP-1 PSUs.
There are no terrible downsides on returning to stock, the errors are simply ones of omission. Most obviously resolution and ambience/depth. Playing the two tracks listed above makes it clear how far I had come. Taking a step back is instructive, and tells me that I was pursuing the right course. I can't really imagine what my upgraded Mutec will do for me, but it's an exciting prospect.

Last night I had some fun comparing digital cables from the loan Mutec to the LKS. I tried a Belden 4694R high grade co-ax cable and, compared with the Wireworld AES, it was very close indeed. I was surprised how close. I then tried a Yannis XLR cable for AES and that sounded different - a touch smoother but again very acceptable. Even optical was interesting but ultimately loses too much detail and some impact to the others.
I became interested in Canare DA206 and have ordered a short 300mm cable from eBay with Neutrik gold pin connectors, just to see whether extreme shielding works in the way that my Canare LV-77S cables work so well for the master clock feeds.

Further playing - I treated the Wireworld AES cable pins with graphene (don't think I did that when new).
Secondly, and much more interestingly: how many of us have said that the difference between the selectable digital filters on DACs is vanishingly small? Last night I tried them all and landed on FAST-M (Fast rolloff Minimum Phase). Better than my previous default setting of SLOW-M. I guess that it reduces content in the ultrasonic range, thus playing nice with my beryllium tweeters.
Whatever, these two tweaks have raised the system's game to be the equal of my Mutec, using the mains powered loaner. Now I'm really looking forward to getting my modified one back.

It be interesting if the filter settings stays the same when you get the Mutec back or go back to the old settings

Yes, agreed John. Right now, some of my favourites are sounding at once even more detailed yet calmer. It gives a more spacious presentation but with pinpoint imaging. Music like Shpongle sounds fantastic like this.
I will definitely revisit the digital filter when I get my Mutec back.

One thing I shall try later: I happen to have an SR Blue fuse powering the router and an SR Red powering the DAC. I'm going to reverse this, giving the router the Red and putting the Blue powering the DAC, where its slightly smoother quality should possibly pay off.
It's that game of the more resolution you have, the more you have to take care of any intrusive harshness. I have a LOT of resolution with the system right now, so all my tiny tweaks are aimed towards smoothness.

That worked rather well and I'm quite pleased with myself. The Red works fine in the router while the Blue is the perfect answer to the ES9038Pro chipset's extreme detail retrieval. A bit more depth, a bit more atmosphere, still the detail and occasionally explosive dynamics. Just... calmer.
Tony said to me once that you don't want Blues throughout your system and I can see his point. However, it's a good foil for digital components like high resolution DACs.

I understand where you coming from I concentrated on smoothness once I moved to the Faitals I do not worry about ultimate resolution these days as I have lots of power and dynamics on tap. Even less so with the Kefs

I don't need any more resolution, John, although my modified Mutec might have different ideas when I get it back.
All my efforts are towards presentation: ambience, spatial positioning, lack of harshness, vocal clarity.
