The Pass preamps may be different, but I count myself as not-a-fan of the power amps. I home demmed an Aleph 3 a few decades ago, and owned a X150 much more recently and both to a degree were good cures for insomnia (the Aleph 3 being much worse in that regard). Forum discussion indicates this is indeed indicative of the brand, with each subsequent generation of Pass power amps getting less dozy. But then I am generally not a fan of class A solid state power amps for the same reason.

If you speak to the few dealers that sell Pass their preference is for the power amps over the pre.
I2s is imho the best method of moving audio data over short distances (Providing several parameters are in place) however the use of i2s over RJ45 for me is a better transmission format imho

I plan to have both I2S-H and I2S-E in my solution, just to cover all bases!

You could try the AES67 format which is rather good too, sorry we are going to disagree on the transparency of the Pass which is easy to demonstrate. Its all good fun on the journey

Putting future plans aside for the moment, I had a good long listening session after work yesterday. My system sounds amazing, far and away the best sound I've ever had. The musical presentation just pulls me in and keeps me attentive, in fact it demands attention. I've been playing quite a lot of jazz and music I don't know at all well as my 'catalogue' continues to expand. One example is John Patitucci, which I played again last night (Messaien's Gumbo). The musicianship on display is mesmerising and the visceral impact of this small combo in my music room was notable. Once again, I reflected on how this was coming to me via Spotify and a modified £200 DAC. Utterly remarkable. John and I had discussed on Saturday how Jazz in particular responds so well to improvements in timing in the digital chain. I cannot think of another genre that so needs timing and precision in order to 'wake up' and become so real. Herbie Hancock is another performer that I have new-found respect for. Cantelope Island has never sounded so convincing. Never a musician to have quite ensnared me in the past, I'm listening now! So one part of me just wants to leave it all alone and revel in the music while another keeps thinking "sell and reinvest what I'm not using", thus the Ayre going up for sale. It's a great position to be in and I feel no sense of urgency to move on. I certainly will not add to the value of the system, but reinvesting redundant items is ok in my book.

Your system images so well On the John Patrucci track sounds come from different parts of the room and not really possible to locate where the speakers are Last night I was listening to Discover weekly and just really enjoying discovering new music for me this is what I am really enjoying hearing music that is new to me and feeling involved in the performance

That John Patitucci track confused the Hell out of me. Firstly I misread it and thought it was going to be John Petrucci, and when it started I wondered how long he'd been playing sax, secondly, I kept expecting Tom Waits to start... well, I was going to say "singing," but you know what I mean.

For the DAC, I'm thinking of the LKS MH-DA004. This small Chinese company are virtually unknown in the west but appear to have the best yet implementation of the ES9038Pro chipset in a dual mono configuration, as well as I 2S, S/PDIF and every other popular input, remote control, balanced XLR outputs and, importantly, 32-bit digital volume control. After a lot more research and reading (especially in Head-Fi) I've decided on the LKS for my DAC. I've sold the Ayre so I placed the order immediately as delivery is 3-4 weeks from China. I shall start with my current Pi/DigiOne using S/PDIF and get thoroughly used to what it can do compared with the SEG before I go to stage II with the I 2S streamer.

It's good that you doing this in small steps

It seems sensible, John, and is the only way I can guarantee that I'm getting more music from each step. The modified SEG sets a high bar so we shall see.
I did a check for the last big system upgrade I did, which was the Belles SA-100 in 2015. Before that were the Usher Be-20 speakers in 2008. Not exactly a box swapper!

I've done more than that, especially recently. Who'd a thought ?

There's one review of your new DAC on Amazon, and it's headed "Great DAC, rubbish manual." Be warned.

I've downloaded the 'manual', which is really just an extended data sheet. Not their strength, I think.
However, the build quality and component selection look superb for the price, not to mention the features.
At least that Amazon review didn't give it a single star for poor packaging as I've seen elsewhere for otherwise fine products!

Nice one Martin - shame it's a 3-4 week wait!
My recent Chinese specials arrived in about 10 days so hopefully you might get yours a bit sooner.

I think 3-4 weeks is the default claim but it can be quicker. Unfortunately, big items attract duty and it's the UK end that drags its heels with clearance. Not to mention the 'handling charge' typical of Parcelfarce et al.

So you didn't ask them to put a value of £10 on the customs label?

That bloody whistle made me jump! - totally life like on my JBL 2482 / Vitavox S2 combo. Nice one on the DAC. Look forward to reading about it and some day hearing it. How does Kali reclocker output get to HDMI I2S or RJ45?
