Excellent, Paul. I looked at a Synology but as this is an experiment I found a used single-drive WD NAS on eBay at a cheap price.

I've got the Synology set up with 2x2TB discs in a RAID 1 configuration. I wanted the extra layer of protection as I've got over 6,000 hours worth of music that I do not want to have to replicate one album at a time if I suffer a disc failure.

I keep a master set of files on my OneDrive. There are not many CDs I will need to rip (but sadly, all the Telarc label ones) and I just keep a handful of free download hi-res files. I will never, ever download paid-for files, so I don't need RAID for this purpose.

I've now ordered a WD My Cloud NAS drive so that I can play files (RIPs of CDs I have which are not on Spotify) and also some hi-res files that I have. Hopefully doing it this way (via ethernet to the router) and not by using the USB interface in the Pi, should give me the same excellent quality playback that I'm now achieving. We shall see. Will you RIP via a PC and CD slot ?

Yes, my PC and external CD drive (I don't have anything old enough to feature a CD slot). I'll use Exact Audio Copy. This'll only be for a small handful of CDs, though.

You should get a lift in performance with the NAS. I find the sound more "composed". I don't actually use a NAS I use a Windows Share from my fanless media server.

Martin & Paul,
I have mentioned before, back in the UK, I play my music from a NAS... a 4 bay QNAP one... Since it is the only brand I've owned, I cannot compare, but the ongoing firmware support has been rather good with new features added all the time. NAS's are can be much, much more these days... DLNA media servers etc. Anyway, at the time, I went for 2 straight 3TB drives since I could not justify the cost of RAIDING them at the time. Backup of music is to two separate USB3 portable drives and a standalone PC. Backup of work (school lesson resources) is the same with added Dropbox.
The files are made available via SAMBA, standard windows network file sharing.....
However, I read somewhere that NFS (Unix network file sharing) is better for audio. The the NAS and Pi will support this out of the box.
While I am here in Northern Cyprus, a 4TB USB3 portable drive is hanging off of the router pretending to be a NAS.... actually it does a very good job all things considered.
Cheers Sean

Thanks, Sean. I don't need much storage as I will never buy files and I won't rip CDs that are on Spotify, so a simple 1TB NAS will do me fine. My focus is definitely on streaming.

I'll use Exact Audio Copy No, I won't. It doesn't appear to work any more with Windows 10. I'm using another old favourite, CD Ex.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode, Martin?

It didn't work the first time but you prompted me to try again after a restart. Seems to be extracting WAVs ok now. Good, always liked EAC.

Is EAC the one for techies that like to fiddle around wear a hair shirt ?

EAC is the best way to extract WAV files from a CD as it will try many times to guarantee integrity by re-reading the sectors and applying maximum CIRC error correction & redundancy to the data. If the disc is marginal it can take a very long time.

I'm glad you got it working, After a quick Google I found someone with the same problems who got running in Vista compatibility mode. Having said that, other people seem to have it working fine in Win10 without resorting to compatibility mode.

I think it may depend on the CD/DVD drive connection. In my case, an external USB DVD drive. I'm glad it's working, too, and I'm experimenting having ripped two treasured discs that are not on Spotify.

I've been using it with W10 with no problems.

Me too. No issues with W10 and EAC.

Perhaps EAC has become more friendly. Will give it a look again

No, I won't. It doesn't appear to work any more with Windows 10. Works fine for me in W10 Martin . . . I'm using EAC V1.3
EDIT:
Ah, didn't read the rest of the thread, I see you have it working now.
