John is bringing his DigiOne over this weekend, which means we can have a DigiOne versus my Digi+ Pro shootout. That's going to be mighty interesting.

Great, that will be a key test. Can you try it with and without reclocking in the DAC? That would help us understand what reclocking in the DigiOne does.

Yes, we'll switch the SEG to Mode 0 (standard S/PDIF clock) which may help to amplify the differences between them, then return to Mode 3 to confirm.
Meanwhile, I'm going to remove the galvanic isolation jumper and re-test co-ax as I'd rather not use different cables when testing between them.

Doh! Stupid me, I've just noted in the SEG manual that the Mode is saved per input. Which means that I was comparing optical in Mode 3 with co-ax in Mode 0. No wonder optical sounded better!

I do not believe there is a new Beginning Martin. It is going around in circles the wrong way imho.. I have 100% faith in 1980's Audio with exception to the Source.. I thoroughly believe that the Sources back then were the issue,Strangleholding the system!! they have to be, these days albums re taken from the old masters worked upon thru far superior Digital Methods to what they used to be is a win win for starters
Strap Lossless into the old systems they will sing like angels.

That's not the way I'm hearing it, Andr'e. CDs are my master source and have been for a while, I have an extremely good player and they (mostly) sound wonderful. The turntable is there for my legacy collection of LPs but I won't be buying any more records.
I am skipping past file-based, it never really struck a chord with me. All that pointless ripping! Spotify (or another streaming service) is my new beginning. Suddenly I don't have a few thousand albums any more, I have a few million*!
* I just checked.

Nothing on Spotted one for me, i dont like CD, I have no option but Files. One thing Files has done is brought my music to life. I have a good CD machine but Files sound a tad better to me. Like i said im trying to get a sound like a good record deck. A lot of stuff these days is a bit too bright for me, i understand this is what people want & apparently its sound progress. Tell you summert though im really glad i bought this Headphone unit. Got five different pairs of AKG now & all sound good thru it.

Nice to see honesty in an Hi-Fi enthusiast cos the majority would tell pork pies say LP is the last word in which it certainly is not. LP sound quality is what has caused a lot of problems for me in the past & the key reason ive moved on lots of Amps & speakers for no reason.. Ofc i have a turntable but it is only for 12" singles, they just sound better anyway.

Do you have a method of ripping your LPs?

Im not ripping LP's.. LP's are the problem, poor sound imho, the music has to come from a CD but the streamer conveying the File is the important factor, i have not heard nothing that sounds like the HRT. totally free of any nasty what so ever.

While I'm waiting for my Pi 3 and DigiOne to arrive, I'm still enjoying the Pi 2 and Digi+ Pro. I tried another digital cable (a QED Performance Co-ax) and got a small uplift in sound quality. Using another track John introduced me to as a test. It certainly gives my system a workout.
Next up will be my Rare Bird CD on Esoteric.

LP's poor sound, what did you use to play them on? Digital is progressing but nowhere near as good as vinyl yet or R2R for that matter. I guess as an example one person who has a £200 turntable may think digital sounds better which is fair enough. Pity really as a top flight turntable and partnering equipment will outclass 99% of digital front ends to my ears. The only thing that gets even close is Scott Berrys (CAD) DAC and Server which as soon as I heard ordered the pairing. Spotify, Tidal etc are not for serious listening IMO and as for all this hi res nonsense, give me CD rips to WAV any day. If you need convincing that R2R or vinyl sounds better than streaming or CD's come to my shop.

FLAC is lossless compression so should be the same as WAV only smaller. Yes, I know about the CPU overhead but I also now know that clocking and low jitter are by far the most important things.

My recent experience is that my Rega RP3 playing a good piece of Vinyl significantly out performed my then, Naim NDX. But then again, so did the Cambridge/Beresford combo I now use, so I might have to do the test again.
