It was grey with a bright red patch on the back of his head.

Then I keep an eye out for a bird that is going to land in the water. If you are going to try this, use center weighted metering for the exposure setting.

I just happened to have my lens pointing in that direction of the lake when I noticed some big disturbance under the surface. Next thing I saw was a bird with a fish showing up in my viewfinder.
