What a way to start a holiday!
Yesterday we left for our yearly pilgrimage to see the family in Greece. Last year we spent so much on flights we decided to economise by flying direct to Macedonia where my father-in-law would collect us by car; it's about 3 hours from his home in Northern Greece. This saved us 400 or 500 quid in fares.
Anyway, we arrived in Skopje and then had an amazing meal at a restaurant in one of the oldest houses in the town. Feeling happy to be heading to Greece, we were driving on one of the main roads out of the city. My father-in-law had to break fairly sharply at one point due to a car in front suddenly braking and a second or so later we felt a big impact behind us. A Smart car had ploughed into us at reasonable speed. Thankfully nobody was badly hurt and all I've got is a stiff neck. The Mazda 6 however looks like a frickin' concertina from behind though! I couldn't believe the damage this little car did whilst it only lost a front bumper and number plate!!
We then spent about two hours waiting in the searing heat for the police to arrive but they never did show - they appeared to be dealing with a more serious accident just down the road... It took an eternity to deal with all the insurance papers but fortunately the young lady with the not-so-Smart car admitted responsibility and was generally very helpful - we got the impression this wasn't the first time it had happened to her and she was well prepared...
Finally got back home about 1am, everyone shattered of course. I was left feeling grateful that it was a Smart car and not something more substantial that hit us.
Let's hope the rest of the holiday is a wee bit more relaxing...
