Also Sharp do a optical FET,s which also work well driven from a external light source at 850nm. And you could also try the Germanium types old one like OCP71/2.

I'm interested to know how much cadmium sulphide would be used in such an application... Under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, use of Cadmium is limited to a concentration 0.01% or 100 ppm when used in electronic equipment...

I notice that Philips are trying to introduce cadmium based TV and computer displays -
