LOL - I could just imagine Ruth's reaction to them!
I would not expect the bass to go particularly deep, looking at the bass horn.

The bass is done with a downward firing 15" driver in the vertically aligned enclosure. It's aperiodically loaded.

So there's another enclosure, not just the downward firing black horn?

Those speakers stunned me - the first (and only) speakers to make me look at my MBLs and think "hmmmm ...."
Transparency, immediacy, presence, vibrancy, imaging. Just amazing. I heard them at a show 3 or 4 years ago, I think.
But the bass is a bit loose, and they kind of lose it at high dynamic levels. Fantastic for moderate and small scale music, though.
The wife said I should get them and put the MBLs into storage for a while! - but that didn't quite happen. I suspect if G-Point had been a bit closer to me so I could pop along for a longer dem it might have done, though!
Martin: what you see there is what you get, the bass is in the downward firing black horn. They need a good sub really, to get them full range, dynamically and in terms of frequency, I suspect..

Sorry Martin, I thought you had assumed the larger red horn dealt with the bass. The 15 incher isn't horn loaded though.

Ah ok, all clear. The 15" driver is at the mouth of that enclosure with a tapered load behind it.

Yep, that's right. I was really rather disappointed with how these speakers performed this year and thought they were much better the previous year (same room, same positioning, but completely different source and amplification).

Sensitive speakers like that would need very careful matching. A partnering amp could be operating in a more non-linear part of its operating range (e.g. Class B switching distortion) or too close to the noise floor, for instance.

They are not bad in the mid range, bass is not what front loaded horn bass would be and they lack the speed, depth and power I am accustomed to at the bottom end, a normal sub would struggle for speed I think. But, for a reasonably sized package they are not bad, if you have the potential to add another channel.
It's interesting how different equip can make or break...

"not bad" says Steve. Blimey. Different tastes, different ancilliaries, different room, different music ... ?? I heard them at the National Show in a moderate sized room (25 footer?) a few years back and was blown away by the most transparent midrange I've ever heard! Funny old hobby. --- I suspect that it's the different music that's the key, and the different requirements and expectations that it places on the sound. When it comes to the crunch I'm a small scale listener (only 5'7" ) and place much higher importance on the music's inner dynamic envelope rather than the outer one. Or maybe the sound really was that different at Cranage. I wasn't there so I have no idea.

Ideally, of course, speakers should play ALL musical genres equally well, but as we know that's almost unachievable.

Ironically a relatively cheap mass produced product is likely to be a better all rounder to something highly specialised. Probably because they focus on the designers particular preferences. The description of these lines up with typical horn sound. Maybe why I usually hear this sort of speaker being demoed with a string quartet rather than Deep Purple. BTW how much are they asking for these? I need a laugh this morning.

I did spend time in the room and found the mid range quite restricted and not particularly open, dynamics were ok, comments on the bass were spot on as well.
Have heard better sounding horns for sure, however electronics pay a major role in this as does the room.
Not much of horn lover in fairness only ever heard two pairs that could deliver and one of those was a cost no object affair, (not Magico or Living Voice either!)

Horning Agathon Ultimates are the only horns that have truly blown me away, but still not as good all-rounders as my Ushers.

Steve system can do rock well You must hear it now with the BIG bass amps. Really rocks well Band of skulls, never sounded so good I listened to The Wall last night. Epic drums and bass impact - well it satisfied me at any rate
I found my musical tastes being forced by speakers like Monitor Audio & ProAc,, I broke free of that with big Tannoy's, but the horns are in another league of all genre playability.
I think the Vitavox S2 for upper mid, on a 350Hz tractrix horn takes some beating. Not the aluminium diaphragmed ones either...
Problem with 3 way horn systems is you push the horns to the limits cutoff wise and things start to get tricky. 4 or 5 way is much more comfortably for full range.

Sorry Steve, wasn't thinking of yours but only commercially available horns. Yours are exceptional.

BTW how much are they asking for these? I need a laugh this morning. When I heard them at the National Show a few years ago I was surprised how 'reasonable' they were - about £10k iirc. Ridiculous though it may sound, from what I heard on the day that was a bargain compared to the competition. I was seriously tempted!
