Classic FM has done a list of 25 of the Greatest Violinists of all time , with some clips of each one ... www.classicfm.com/instruments/violin/features/best-violinists-ever/?cmpid=E.Classic_Notes_16.07.07&cmp=EMC-SAIL#gudxRtpQlIQ7zJRx.97Here's the list in full - Joshua Bell Nicola Benedetti Sarah Chang George Enescu Julia Fischer Midori Hilary Hahn Jascha Heifetz Janine Jansen Nigel Kennedy Fritz Kreisler Gidon Kremer Yehudi Menuhin Viktoria Mullova Anne-Sophie Mutter Ginette Neveu David Oistrakh Itzhak Perlman Gil Shaham Isaac Stern Maxim Vengerov Antonio Vivaldi Eugène Ysaÿe Niccolò Paganini Pablo de Sarasate
Who do you think should be out and who should be in? Three who I would place on the list would be Alfredo Campoli, Kyung-wha Chung and Henryk Szeryng. One who I think will later be seen as one of the greats is the wonderful Alina Ibragimova. One who definitely wouldn't be on my list would be Joshua Bell - I just don't see any evidence of greatness about his playing!

I can't see how Antonio Vivaldi can be on the list, simply because there is no recorded evidence of his playing except for written records.
Another vote here for Alina Ibragimova, she was fantastic when we saw her recently.
Vengerov is simply masterful.

Ones I would include ....
Ferras, Ricci, Lautenbacher, Milstein, Cerkov, Zehetmair maybe, Szeryng. Erxleben gets on my personal list for his jaw dropping recording of Shosty VC1.
I suspect that Bell, Benedetti, Mullova, Mutter, Jansen etc are just there to appease ClassicFM advertisers!
Stern? ..... nah.
Perlman and Heifetz are anathema to me. Perlman is the Abbado of the violin, technically amazing but interpretively merely proficient. Heifetz is cold and aloof.
Vivaldi ? - wtf is that about! There are so many pre-recording 'greats'.

I suspect that Bell, Benedetti, Mullova, Mutter, Jansen etc are just there to appease ClassicFM advertisers! Ha, yes more than likely! With the exception of Mutter I think they need to have had a longer career to be considered truly great. I hope and think that Nicola Benedetti will go on to achieve that accolade in the future - she's an electric performer on stage.

I hope and think that Nicola Benedetti will go on to achieve that accolade in the future - she's an electric performer on stage. Agreed, she's quite stunning when playing her favourite pieces. I'd love to hear her play the Glass Concerto No.1.

Votes here for Kyung-wha Chung, Henryk Szeryng, and Nathan Milstein too. I also hope Nicola Benedetti fulfils her potential to become one of the greats, although I fear that the same could have been said of Anne Sophie Mutter in the past. Josef Suk or Pinchas Zukerman anyone, and if we're going for pre-recording era greats, where's Paganini?

Zukerman - yes! I'm a big fan. Unfairly overshadowed by his pal Perlman, in my view.

Oh dear it's all going wrong for me today - I accidentally started editing Slinger's post instead of replying to it! And yes, sorry again, the boy Paganini is in the list but I didn't do a good job of cut and paste! I also forgot Sarasate - apologies to both gentlemen concerned ..

Zukerman - yes! I'm a big fan. Unfairly overshadowed by his pal Perlman, in my view. I'm seeing Zukerman playing the Bruch later in the year and very much looking forward to it ...

What about Najda Salerno Sonnenberg? I saw her on stage once and thought she was marvellous. Don't know what's become of her.

Salvatore Accardo must also be very close to that list - still playing beautifully today! There's a few in the list I would certainly put him above ...
