I intend completely getting rid of the Hi-Fi within a month or so & replacing it all with a matching mid 80's Technics system. I will however retain my Speakers & Pick-Up Arm/Cart. Here's the start of it. a pair of Techy Audio Cassette Decks. I chose these because this was the very first cassette deck i bought in the 80's, 2 Header but who cares sounded good to me. I have enough room ontop for the Techy Amplifier i intend buying.. I also intend this system to be 100% Analogue. I will ofc be buying a Techy turntable but it certainly will not be a '1210'

See if you can find a working SL10 then, Andr'e. That would be in keeping with your new minimalism.

A Technics reel to reel would be a perfect match and 100% analogue

Even Technics stuff qualifies as hi-fi I think.

It is Hi-Fi obviously but that is it, not specialist tripe is it? Low Key is the word for it.

No steve. for two reasons they are pig Ugly imho & secondly they constitute overrated specialist Hi-Fi. 'SL-150' is what i want providing they were available in dark Techy colour. Always seem to see them in Silver

I've got a silver 150ii Currently fitted with an ADC XLM mk1, which might be old enough to find favour with Andr'e! I've had the 150 for a few years now - one of the things I don't seem to boxswap.

Look at that - in fine nick, too. What's the arm, Jerry? Looks a bit like an AT.

Yep, it's in top condition. The arm looks like an AT because it is an AT - a 1010, top o' the range. Designed by AT but made by Audiocraft.

Nice. Complete with Sumiko headshell, too.

I have the original headshell as well, but it's a strange design with bolt holes only accessible from underneath and quite shallow so the screws used have to be pretty much exactly the right length or it's a no-go. Maybe they are designed for use with AT cartridges? I've not tried any with it. Aha! - problem solved ... Photo here of a slightly different model implies they come with a wide range of screws to suit most carts. That should sort it, but I didn't get the set with the arm!

I've often puzzled over the several-fixed-holes designs. It means you nearly always have compromised alignment - I know it's very much in a range, but still it's nice to get it as near-perfect as possible.

I agree, it seems a pointlessly idiosyncratic headshell design to me - but I guess you get a nice clean headshell appearance without any disfiguring nuts and bolts!

It is Hi-Fi obviously but that is it, not specialist tripe is it? Low Key is the word for it. Back to the OP. (Sorry for the off-topic, Andr'e) I find myself in a surprising degree of agreement, in general principles. I've owned quite a few audiophile-approved products and I have to confess enjoyed them! But my own experience over the last few years is that, for electronics at least (amps, DACs) the high price audiophile gear is simply not necessary. I'm sure we would all choose our own personal preferences, but my current power amp (from a Belgian pro company) cost me £200, a vintage Philips Black Tulip pre-amp £50, my Chinese DAC £75 - and I think my system is sounding its best ever. Also on the cartridge front - I've had some fancy MC carts in my time, but for sheer musical enjoyment none has surpassed my current ADC XLM. So, yes, 'specialist tripe' isn't needed to achieve real musical satisfaction, imo. But unlike Andr'e I have gone digital - still a strictly no-nonsense approach, though, with streaming direct from my laptop from Spotify. No fancy streamer boxes, just a USB cable from laptop to DAC. Sorted.

Yeh its the MK.1 im wanting which is a totally different deck to that. People wont wanna hear this but they were a better made deck than the 'SL1210' imho..

When i was at School this old Equipment im buying gave me so much enjoyment i was constantly glued to the Stereo, Even girls took a back seat for a bit.. I see no reason why it should not tick the same boxes again. Ever since i started getting seriously into Hi-Fi it's been nothing but disappointment to the point where i stopped listening to music for a period.
The worse worse thing i ever did was buy a CD player & i mean that most sincerely folks
Is this signs of a mid life crisis or just falling back down to earth?
