Has anyone got any experience with wired powerline adapters?
I’m not so happy with the wi-fi speeds I’m getting with my new fibre broadband. I’m getting 40mb to the router but wi-fi speeds very anywhere between 15-30mb on my Mac, and that's after finding the best channel to use it on. If I bought a couple of these adapters and connected both via ethernet, what kind of improvement should I expect?

Also consider a Wi-Fi range extender, which can give greater signal at the extremities of the house and preserve throughput. I can recommend the TP Link having made good use of them.

I'm not a fan of powerline adapters. They inject RF nasties over the mains, and they're nowhere near as dependable as proper ethernet cabling, nor have the same bandwidth.

Martin, I downloaded the very useful Netgear wi-fi analytics app onto my phone which shows you your wi-fi signal strength wherever you are standing.
Standing by my router the signal is 100% and around 66% where my mac is sited, so in theory a range extender looks like a very good and cheap solution!

I installed the TP Link Range Extender this morning.
It gives you two methods of set-up - with WPS button or Web Browser. Mine didn't work with WPS but was set up using browser in a couple of minutes. I've now got 100% signal strength in my living room as confirmed by both the unit and a wi-fi analytics app.
After messing around with wi-fi channels I'm now getting over 30mb on the wi-fi so all in all a good way to spend £15!
Many thanks to Martin for the suggestion.

Great - they're nice little devices, those.
Plug-and-forget (until someone unplugs it to plug the vacuum cleaner in...)!

They only thing I find with Extenders is that the Wifi connections are generally not suitable for streaming Music or Movies if you want a completely stable connection. I use the ethernet connections on my Extender in this example and it works a treat

Ah yes, I've just found that out when streaming a film via airplay ... Not a problem, this wi-fi extender will go to my mum and I'll get another one with ethernet - thanks for the tip Paul

Even an ethernet connection over the mains may not solve everything - not tried myself but I've seen posts from people saying it's not 100%
It's usually not that difficult or intrusive to run an ethernet cable from the router and if you can do it it's a much better solution than relying on wifi or adapters.
All your problems will be solved then including highres video and 24/192 audio!

Not that frequent but can be a little annoying so worth watching out for

Yes I wanted to put cables around my house but he wife wasn't t all keen on disrupting and 'damaging' the house in the process so I had to go with next best. Overall Extenders are quite useful, not perfect but what technology is??

I use a wee TP link to boost the wifi on the rig. Agree with julesd and Martin - they're good.
