The knighthood for Sir Rod, whose own stellar career has seen him sell more than 100 million records over six decades, is for services to music and charity. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-36492850He promises to 'wear it well' Didn't see that one coming

Another gong that discredits the knighthood system. David Bowie and Freddy Mercury did far more than that, but they received no such gong recognition. The average person in the street can perhaps name just about one record from Rod, which sums it up for me.

Generally speaking the people who do most for charity are the ones we hear least about, but I'm interested to know what set of figures you're basing your "they did more than him" comment on. Can I also take it that while you like Bowie's and Queen's music you dislike Rod Stewart's?

I'm not going to be judgmental because I often don't know what a musician has done for charity.
What I do object to is people in big business who may received an honour for suspect reasons, or party cronyism where someone's mate receives an honour for no good reason at all.

David Bowie declined a Knighthood in 2003 and also a CBE in 2000. Freddie Mercury died early so who knows what may have come his way. Well done Rod Stewart a thoroughly deserving nice guy IMO.

Slightly odd for me after seeing him and The Faces live so many times. Always a great gig even though I'm sure they had all been drinking and were having a great time themselves
Could not have forecast a knighthood
