I love the huge expanses and sculptural use of wood in the new Harbin opera house in China. There's a slide show of superb images of the building here. It's the image at the top of the page I've linked to but may take a little while to load.

Absolutely stunning Tim, er Chris ... I think it is mind-bendingly beautiful. Would love to go to a concert there ... Reminds me of Barbara Hepworth sculpture ...

I love the use of wood, as well as the smooth 'organic' curves, however I find something about the auditorium unsettling. I looks like you are sitting inside a giant skull: you are made to feel very small and insignificant. This is how I feel inside gothic cathedrals and is of course the Chinese Government's attitude to the state vs. the individual.
Wonder what the acoustics are like?

Quite stunning design and use of materials. I'll bet that was some budget, too.

Stunning - thanks for sharing, Chris.
I'm just gobsmacked by the thing - aesthetics and economics! As Martin says, that must have cost a packet and shows an interesting insight into the Chinese government priorities - very different from the current situation in the "West".

I'm pretty sure I read that the seating capacity is only about 1,600 in the main auditorium. There's another hall for smaller events, with room for 400 occupants. This makes the cost seem all the more astronomical as far as I can tell - payback will be a long time coming!

Different problem set altogether, but even with Rattle's backing London will struggle to fund the urgently needed new concert hall.
