We took a spin out to the the Yorkshire Dales National Park today and spent a few hours walking near the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway line. Back home through the Forest of Bowland and the Trough of Bowland

That last shot of the Trough of Bowland features one of my favourite lonely trees. I love the story of what was once meant to be the world's loneliest tree, which was somewhere in the Sahara in Niger. It unfortunately met an extremely unlikely demise in 1973 when some drunk idiot ran into it - the only solid, upright object for 250 miles in any direction - with a lorry.

I love that viaduct, gorgeous setting and especially wonderful when a steam train passes over it.

I love that viaduct, gorgeous setting and especially wonderful when a steam train passes over it. They certainly knew how to build things in them days.
Pity there are no steam trains for a while due to the line being closed at Armathwaite. A big landslip after the last floods being the cause.
Network Rail are on the case but it might be next year before it's finally fixed.

There are some man made objects you can look at for a long time. This is certainly one. Bet the photos don't do it justice
Be great to have that on my bike ride. Must explore further afield, take camera and see what I can dig up

Just for the sake of completeness, here's a photo of the viaduct snapped today from the train just before crossing it. We drove over to Settle and jumped on the Settle to Carlisle railway and had lunch in Appleby. Beautiful day, great scenery but impossible to photograph properly!

I've always wanted to do the Settle to Carlisle run, I'll have to put it on the bucket list

Chris just realised this is the viaduct I crossed a few weeks ago by train on way to Kirkby Stephen where we got off to go for a country walk ... Such a lovely area and all the old stations are so beautifully maintained. Wasn't so fun when we missed our train back and the next one was 2 hours later ...
