I have just joined. I live in the beautiful south west corner of Western Australia near Margaret River. A long time audio tragic. My main area of interest is speaker building and refurbishment. I have restored and built many speakers but the Gale 401s and classic Tannoys are my favourites.

Hi Jono, Welcome to The Audio Standard. Quite a few of us like to tinker with old speakers and I'm sure we'd love to hear of and learn from your adventures. How does the weather down there treat things like foam driver parts?

The dreaded foam rot! The curse of so many great sounding speakers. It seems we get about 20 years out of AR/Gale type woofer surrounds before they need replacing. I imagine if they are exposed to sun probably less than that-and our summers are very sunny.
A friend runs two pairs of the AR LST speakers [stacked].

A stack of LST is something I would love to hear sometime. I only recently came by my (single) pair and it will be a little while before they're up to scratch.

Hello Jono and welcome to TAS! An 'audio tragic' made me smile. The Gale 401s are lovely, you may find my restoration project interesting. I lived in Melbourne for a while, but that was a long time ago. It must have changed a lot in that time. My only experience of Western Australia was a trip to Perth, Fremantle and the winery coast in the late 1990s. Really gorgeous area and great quality of life.

Welcome from me too Jono - glad to see you like the Tannoys, I'm still very much enjoying my 12" HPD's in Chatsworth cabs ...

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It was Martin Ts Gale restoration project that lured me here. I have restored 5 pars of Gale 401s so far. I have a pair of Yamaha NS1000s in my house at the moment [awaiting cabinet restoration]. Both great speakers from the 1970s. I much prefer the Gales but I can see why some people would like the NS1000s. Detail versus musicality I guess. The Gales are deeply musically and emotionally engaging if you listen that way -the NS100Os more about the brain than the soul. At the moment I am playing with a variation of this open baffle project. www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php/topic/37233-the-best-diy-speaker-in-the-world/ Immense fun for very little money and really rather good in their own way. The cheapo drivers really are surprisingly good.More Goodmans Axiom 80 warmth and vibrancy than Lowther and Fostex shout/scratchiness.

Really interesting project there. The use of an array of inexpensive drivers on an open baffle is intriguing.

Hi Jono, and a warm welcome from me as well. I am not so sure about some of the stuff written about the NS1000M. I was gifted one at a token price many years ago after the owner just could not get to grips with them. Since then I have played about with them, disposed of my B&W, and my far more expensive Thiel are gathering dust in a corner. The NS1000M has helped me during the development of many audio products, and also helped me to finally dispose of a massive subwoofer I had been using.

Yes some people seem to like them but I just can't warm to them at all.I also have some NS75Ts which I much prefer.Actually they are quite excellent.

All I can say is that without the NS1000M I would never have discovered a lot of hidden details in my music collection, and I would not have been able to develop modifications for my DACs that brought those details to the ears of other owners of my products who do not own a NS1000M.

Yes I can see how they might sound detailed. But they have very poor harmonics [probably not helped by the lack of treble above 12000Hz] and very poor centre fill imaging and image depth. The NS75Ts have both of those things together with a much more tuneful and expressive bass [same carbon fibre woofer as the NS1000X] so sound far more engaging and real.
