Has anyone here any 1st hand information of the Vauxhall Signum ?
In particular the facelifted 3.0 diesel automatic model.
The Volvo S60 D5 turbo automatic has had it's day and I'm looking for something with a bigger boot.
The V70 D5 auto would do but they hold their price to well.

Not first hand, but I was previously looking at one of these and did a lot of research. The engine is an Isuzu one, can be good if you get a good'un, but it does have it's common issues. Search Isuzu 3.0 diesel engine on Google for info. PCV failure is common, as is leakage from the injectors into the oil, so there have been cases of engine runaway reported.

Go for the Saab 2.2 diesel. Old skool, not the fastest, but economy and reliability. 400k is not unknown.
Timing chain too, no belt!

You can get that engine in the Vectra too. Find an estate and you'll have plenty room.

..or even better, get an LPG'd V6 or 8..
I've been running round in a WJ 4 litre LPG Jeep Grand Cherokee for the last 18 months with no problems. Costs about 32 quid to fill with gas, I get about 300 miles out of that(bit less around town of course). They are cheap as chips too, folk think they are rubbish because they're American..
The 4 litre will easily do 300k plus as long as it's looked after. In fact I've seen them advertised in the U.S. with that kind of miles as " Low Mileage"!
Bombproof engines.

The 2010 SAAB 9-5 is a good buy. It is near bullet proof and superior in built quality and reliability than the ones made by GM. Boot is huge as well. I came close to buying one, but my wife is short so the size of the car worried her. I fancy the Merc ML350 petrol myself. But the better built ones are from 2010 upwards.

After much deliberation, and increasing my budget a bit, I am leaning towards a Volvo V50 2.4D D5 turbo 180hp with the geartronic auto box.
The engine/box is almost the same as my current S60, and over the last 7 years It's done me proud. The V50 is a bit smaller, but being an estate has more usable volume, and better fuel economy, which is what I needed.
I've found a nice one in black (similar to the picture-same wheels) with heated leather seats, electric sunroof and very low miles (for a 2007 car) and will decide in the next few days whether to proceed, or not. Unless anyone has any horror story's about the new (ish) V40 and V50 range.

I believe it's more Focus based, but not a bad thing it seems.
I've read a lot of diesel owners have trouble getting the specified MPG, but those 5 cyl D5 turbo diesels are very economical if you don't thrash them, which I won't.

Yes a decent engine, my parents had an XC70 with that 5 cylinder jobbie. Decent poke when you want to,but with good economy.

I always lusted after a Volvo (XC60 and 90 especially), so on retiring I had a go at a couple, and I was disappointed - they seemed to me no more than average, plus I couldn't get a decent seating position - I seemed to be peering over the dashboard to see where I was going (even with the seat fully raised).
I'm sticking to Subarus..

Ford base and then Volvo'd Like the later Saabs. GM based and then Saab'd - very well done but not cheap enough for the then GM bosses Volvo one of the few I consider worthwhile
