Included in the recent Virtuoso Violinists programme on BBC Four was Maxim Vengerov playing ‘Dance of the Goblins’.
I thought I would share this piece here as it’s one of those wonders that some of the very finest virtuosos choose to play for their encores.
Bazzini was a composer but was best known as a top-flight concert violinist who was favoured by some of the top composers of the day like Mendelssohn. At an early age he met Paganini and fell under his spell, with the influence very clear in his work. You really cannot overestimate how difficult this piece is to play. It’s not really the break-neck speed, it’s the total and utter mastery of technique with its myriad of bowing techniques that make this piece so special and demanding.
First of all we have Itzhak Perlman from his historic visit to Moscow in 1990 and then Vengerov from the Proms I believe …
Enjoy!

As I think I mentioned in the thread about the program the Vengerov performance was one of the two highlights for me. That spiccato and ricochet bowing is mind-blowing, and as for playing left hand pizzicato at the same time... Well, it's all done with mirrors, obviously. I liked the Perlman but there just seems to be so much more joy and humour in Vengerov's take on the piece.

I love the way Vebgerov attacks those rapid harmonics at the end

Just in case you wanted to practise it... Well that's the first 2 or 3 seconds...

Amazon currently has... Vengerov - The Complete Recordings 1991-2007 (20CDs) for £31.07 inc delivery, new, from Music Magpie (zoverstocks as was) or the slightly less intimidating 5 Classic Albums (5 CDs) for £9.59 inc delivery, new, from Rarewaves. or £9.60 from BestSellerRecordshop. And yes, of course they both have "Goblins" [EDIT] Just found the set I have, which is 11 CDs so sort of bridges the gap between those two. Amazon again - Best Of Maxim Vengerov and the best price looks to be £16.50 (Used, Like New) with free delivery if you spend £20+ The seller is mrtopseller but the sale is fulilled by Amazon.
