Heads up for what promises to be an excellent prog on 'Virtuoso Violinists' with the fabulous Nicola Benedetti doing the presenting honours ... 19.00 on BBC Four.
After that there is a doc at 8pm exploring Yehudi Menuhin - 'Who was Yehudi' ...

Must remember to record that if the Tivo is free. Being BBC4 could be repeated much later
BTW next time you are down I need to play you Jerry Goodman - It's alive. A superb violinist in the rock area

I've just had a quick look and I can't see those two programs being repeated any time this week. +1 vote for Jerry Goodman by the way. Have you seen his "Brick Chicken" with Dixie Dregs (billed as Dixie Drags on YouTube)?

It's not on the Dixie Dregs albums I've got, but here's the YouTube version... Dragging the post back on message briefly...the Nicola Benedetti program was good, although I was expecting more in-depth commentary and a little less playing. Two high points for me, one near the start with a performance from Maxim Vengerov and one near the end which was the classical equivalent of The Beatles and The Stones appearing on stage together to cover a Ray Davies number in the sixties...which probably only makes sense to me.

My favourite Dixie Dregs album, of the ones I have at least, is probably California Screamin' and I bunged a couple of tracks form it in the "What are you playing..." thread last night. N.B. If you missed last night's program(s) iPlayer is your friend. Both Yehudi Menuhin; Who was Yehudi, and Virtuoso Violinists at the BBC are available if you do an alphabetical search on the BBC4 list there. While you're at it check out the Everly Brothers program I watched on Friday, it was terrific. [EDIT] Not sure how I missed it before, but Songs of Sandy Denny at the Barbican is also a must-watch, even if only for Jerry Donahue's effortless guitar work.

Yes the programme was really an excuse to make a cheap programme by raiding the BBC archive with a few words from Ms Benedetti. BUT when the archive is that good it doesn’t really matter!!
What I would love to see another day is a programme to how Paganini changed the shape of violin playing. Nicola gave a few tantalising glimpses of the new techniques he brought to playing - this would make a fantastic extended documentary.
