Casual bird photography is so difficult , I only have a 300mm so they need to be close , from this mornings dog walk :

Beautiful detail, colours and soft background.
I will try to resist any jokes about casual bird photography ...

I've been putting in a fair bit effort to attract the birdies into my back garden and I agree with you totally - it's so difficult to get a decent picture. Yours has come out fine though!

I,m always impressed when people get these shots with a 300. I use a 500 and I can,t usually get that good a shot. perhaps your birds are friendlier than mine..

I will try to resist any jokes about casual bird photography ... I thought casual would sum up non-professional bird photography You need a hide , and a whopper of a lens to do it right .

Must take my camera with me on dog walks Think I'll have to practice a lot to get pics that good. As I fork out a fortune in bird seed I should get better We have a huge variety of birds in the garden and out on the fields

Barry, your first shot is superb. I love the narrow depth of field, perfect for that image.

Yes a bit of cropping goes a long way, but then there's an even bigger problem for focus - you have to get it 100% if you're going to crop, and that's not easy with a long lens, even autofocus can get it wrong at that distance. For us failing photographers, what is the camera/lens you used (don't tell me it's a Canon, as I'm a Nikon man !!!)

Chris I use a Nikon d5500 so not full frame , the lens is a Nikkor 70-300mm 4.5f - 5.6f DX. When I'm looking for birds to shoot I have the camera set ready , Manual - Single point Auto Focus , ISO Auto , Aperture widest (4.5F) and shutter speed 1/320 or more if its very sunny. Always aim for the eye , I just missed with the Chiffchaff but got away with it , you can check focus point when reviewing photos with the bundfled Nikon software.

So, in reality, your lens is actually more than 300mm at the long end.
Is it 1.5 times for Nikon ?

Is it 1.5 times for Nikon ? Yes and yes , I've never had a full frame so can't compare , I supppose a 300mm on a full frame isn't much use at all for birds ?

I love the focus you've achieved, the narrow depth of field and the colours against a blue sky. Even accepting it's a resolution reduced version for forum posting (and you've done a good job - Photoshop with bicubic sharper, by any chance?), it's wonderful.

I use the Nikon packaged software for any touching up or the one bundled with Flickr.
