Yes. Or it could sound better.
It depends on the amount of hash you have on the line, compared with the current throttling of the filter.

Not too sure how the mains are but I do like the idea of a wee bit surge protection and rfi. All you can do is try really. If I do get one I shall report back.

Surge protection is good.
Current throttling* is bad for dynamics.
*of the electrical kind.

I've never found any cheap mains filter/protector/etc to have a positive effect - mostly they kill the dynamics as MartinT says. If you really need one, get a decent one!
