Had a 36" Panasonic CRT telly for many years now.
Kept thinking about a flat screen. Wasn't sure as I want to listen to more music and watch less tv, but I was tempted
Being a cheapskate I keep well off the leading edge and decided that it would be
2nd hand
Panasonic
plasma
50"
SCART and HDMI
Picked up a TH50PZ700B today from Ebay and with the help of the seller at their end and stepson at this end, some tiddlng around I have it working.
Some thoughts : 36" to 50" is a huge jump. I had no idea it would be so big even after measuring. They are heavy. A 2 person lift for sure. The usual Panasonic, well made attributes. The scale of the thing takes the breath away and we are sitting about 10-12' back.
I'm looking forward to a 'big' film
Oh yes, nearly forgot. From memory the 700B has better speakers than the 70B. Seemed quite fair until I connected direct to the system. Using the speakers in the TV is laughable. Connecting to your system is the only way or if in a different room get something cheap with some sort of power

How have you connected it to the system, Mike - into a DAC?

TV speakers in flat panels are all laughable and not worth using.

Sound is from the Tivo so DAC not going to work.
When I play DVDs I could try it, from May onwards.
I larfed when I thought of the reviews of the "sound being better on the 700". Slightly better than a phone I'd say !

Err - the Tivo sends the sound to the TV. Dos the TV have optical or coax digital outputs?

Give it a month or so and I pretty much guarantee you won't notice the size. We went from a 42" to a 55" and it looked bloody huge to start with but now all I keep thinking is "we could have got a 60" in there no problem." If you really want to experience a BIG film though you really ought to invest in a 5.1 amp, a decent centre speaker, and a couple of pairs of JPW minis or similar for front and rear. I'm actually using a used pair of these for my rears now. You can pick up quite a decent sub for around a ton new and then you're ready to rock. Now you've got the telly to enjoy blockbusters on you shouldn't deny yourself the full experience.

Find myself drawn to the music more than films

DVD is not HD. You need Blu-ray for that.

Mike, the box is sending pictures and sound to the TV via HDMI. If the TV has a digital audio output, you can send that to a DAC.

I need to clarify. I have old style tech doing my TV We never watch live TV
Freeview box sends signal to old style Mk1 Tivo by SCART. Tivo is set up to record all sorts, usually with Season Passes or Keywords. Tivo plays back to TV by SCART, sound to Pre Amp by RCA to RCA
I have a DVD player I rarely use that has an HDMI out. The new TV has an HDMI in.
Still learning Printed out the 56 page manual today. Will have a proper remote soon and explore

Since I linked by BT yuview box to the hifi, I spend less than 3 hours a week watching any tv. The telly and box are on but they are constantly on the radio channels the telly is effectively an ornament. We have another in the bedroom with a DVD/HDD connected. It gets a bit more use because it has old favourite TV programmes on. I never thought I'd see the day, but my interest in TV is almost nil.

My Tivo picks up about 30% radio programmes due to the high music content of my keywords

Have you thought about upgrading your Tivo box and dare I say it coming into the modern world? My mother-in-law had a very old Tivo box from Virgin and upgraded to the latest fan dangled one earlier this year and managed a cost saving per month for the Virgin subscription as she, like you had purchased a new TV with HDMI concoctions. Thinking of Surround Sound, if you do choose to go down those lines, I would recommend getting yourself a cheap pair of speakers (literally don't need to be anything that special) to use as rears, similar idea for fronts and sub (although you might not need one with your speakers) and then see if you can source yourself a Yamaha DSP-E800, 3 channel surround sound amplifier. I had one previous (now use a 5 channel Yamaha of the same era but do the same thing) and connect that into your hifi. This is a cheap and simple way to get a reasonable surround sound system, utilising your main system as the fronts. Paul.
