Did anyone catch the first night of the Proms? I thought it was an excellent programme of music. Not my taste at all, in fact I'm finding most of the programme this year a bit boring - there's only half a dozen that I've bookmarked for listening.

I normally find five or six I like the look of and then select a couple from that to attend - I shortlisted my favourites earlier in the thread. Which ones have you bookmarked?

The BBC broadcasts are rather good, it's something they do extremely well. When I do catch a Prom (sadly not going this year) I revel in the sound and picture quality, it makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Friday 29th has two good broadcasts but I'll be away. Better set the box.

Which ones have you bookmarked? I've gone for the lighter ones this year - proms 4,12,15,22,38,43,44,50 - not to say I'll listen to all of them, they're just 'possibles' Plus the last night of course... My enthusiasm diminished this year by the fact that my hifi is away being upgraded, so I'm using the (not so good) backup system. I used to enjoy more proms when they were 'simulcast'.

I used to enjoy more proms when they were 'simulcast'. I find that it's not necessary any more, the quality of the BBC TV broadcast in HD is superb, especially with the sound running through my Caiman-II DAC.

Sadly (for me at least) it appears that they are not broadcasting Prom #42.

I'm always really surprised when people say this - I'm assuming you're piping the TV optical output into your DAC. When I do this, or if I take the output direct from the Youview box, the sound quality I get is pretty basic and nothing like the quality I get from internet radio. I used to be on SKY but got the same poor sound. I am on the fringe of TV reception, though my Youview box says quality level is 100%, signal strength 70% or so. Doesn't explain why I got bad quality on SKY too though.

No, I run optical straight out from the Sky HD box, therefore it comes direct from the data stream. Running it from the TV will have gone through various processing steps which will have degraded it.
It's important to understand that the HD channels sound better than the SD channels, too.

As I mentioned, I had just as bad sound quality when I used the digital output from my SKY box (HD), as your setup, I just paid 5 times as much for the privilege as I do with BT !

Ah ok, well it's down to a different setup and components, then. My TV sound is extremely fine on all manner of broadcasts.

Very moving performance of Mahler 3 tonight...
The LSO under Bernard Haitink were simply irresistible - a performance of the very highest standard.
A reminder of time passing for me - about 40 years ago I was in the boys choir singing this work; was quite an experience, some great memories..

I'm currently watching The Bowie Prom, and enjoying it so far.

Haitink has made Mahler 3 his own over the years. Always moving.

If you get the chance have a listen to Jascha Horenstein's Mahler 3.

Interesting - the Haitink and Horenstein are both top-rated in my Penguin Record Guide!
The Horenstein can be fairly pricey on vinyl though ...

Dvorak Cello Concerto is the highlight of tonight's Prom - a sublime work, I will be listening on the radio for sure ... I'm not familiar with the soloist, Alban Gerhardt ...

Wonderful concerto, the best in the cello repertoire, in my opinion.
