Well, having qualified as a computer service engineer complete with degree, I once walked into a company and announced that I was there to look at their computer system. The girl turned away from me and in a loud voice shouted "the mechanic's here!" So I guess you're right

I can. It's because in the UK, people who are fitters, mechanics, IT help desk workers etc are given the job title of engineer by morons who don't know any better. No offence to those people who are fitters, mechanics and IT help desk workers. Agreed. Only the most egotistical technician would refer to himself as an engineer. It should be a protected and measurable term.

Another young man came on Sunday (9yrs) to build another mini-amp, I was saddened to see he had little or no imagination and his concentration was very poor.
What wrong with some of these's kids??? help Martin teach me how to get through to them without PC games and football.
I finished the project as he was going no where fast. And I did lose my cool once but I was given coffee and stayed cool. I could have spent the day planting flowers in the garden.

It's a difficult subject and Attention Deficit Disorder is being used as an excuse for a whole variety of poor concentration brought about by TV, video games and, increasingly, social media. I think the latter is becoming the most harmful. A lot of it is down to parenting, giving in to the child and allowing them to do what's easiest rather than trying to educate them and keep their minds active. I see it manifested in different ways. For instance, when I take on a placement student at 19-20 years old I can bet nowadays that none of them are able to use any tools. Whose fault is that? I have taught several teenagers how to maintain their cars and none of them have a clue how it all works. Again, who is to blame? The skills are lost because their parents no longer know.
Not all children are like this, but many are and you need huge patience to try and get anywhere with them.

When I had young engineers working with me I was appalled that I had to teach the colour codes and simple things like parallel resistor arithmetic's. OK there English and mostly there pure maths was far above me, but that does not help when your trying to fix a resistor ladder network and can't read the colour codes. As to parents teaching kids, I believe your right, even reading books seems to be hocus pocus now. At least reading from a young age can and should inspire and increase the child's ability to imagine and dream and be inventive, but they never seem to play cow boys and native Americans. Let alone think up silly games with normal old fashion toys in the physical world. I do not think the Dumb Down TV we are plastered with helps, it keeps the population calm and like sheep, even the good Olde Beeb is now filled with crap. WHY ? We are living in the stone-age again but a techy version. Lets save the planet and reduce crap TV and save on Play-station games reduce our demand on fossil fuels and get out and keep fit and not obese. OK Rant over time to make a shelf.
