Having not posted details of my set-up thought it time. This is how it was last July (2015). Nothing fancy - but I quite liked it Under the desk is my Quad 303 that I was using at the time. To the left is a bay window with a pair of Q-Acoustics 2020i that I occasionally use. Most of the time I listen via the Quad L-ite desktop speakers or Senheisser HD 600. Tucked away behind the monitor is a Fiio DAC - since replaced with an audiolab Q-DAC. The Pi/IQAudio DAC has retired to the living room where it is used to stream radio via a Sony 'all-in-one', I have no further use for it.

A diagram of the current state of play as of March 2016. Will post a glossy photo at some point (maybe As I mentioned, the Fiio DAC has been replaced by an audio lab Q-Dac. Other changes include: The Terratec pro-vinyl A/D converter replaced with an M-Audio Profire 610 for transcribing records. Quad 303 substituted with a 405-2 (better!) A Musical Fidelity V-Can headphone amp instead of my home brewed C-Moy effort ..........

That's pretty cool. I like how you've mixed the high tech stuff with the older quad.

Interesting. So do you ever play records via the all digital route and have you compared to the analogue replay system?

I plan on splitting the audio from video side when I move, making my main system audio-only.

I've been messing with converting analogue AV material to digital (including old negatives) for well over a decade and have accumulated a load of A/D boxes and gizmos alongside the Quad gear and TT that I already had from way back, so the process was I suppose 'organic' rather than the result of rational design. Must admit though that I like to keep things small (and cheap) so have avoided large flashy boxes in stacks

Interesting. So do you ever play records via the all digital route and have you compared to the analogue replay system? I have Chris, the M-Audio is a Firewire mixer for analogue input and A/D conversion primarily but does have an SPDIF out via coax I can plug into my DAC. The difference is minimal really although I do prefer the 'straight' analogue flow via the 33 to 405-2. Also the digital route is a bit counter productive because it involves converting A to D and then back from D to A which is both fiddly and adds another process to the signal.

A friend made me a switch so I could switch between direct digital and analogue but the sound was not great so I am just keeping to my digital set up at present

I plan on splitting the audio from video side when I move, making my main system audio-only. I rarely use this set up for TV or films Martin, preferring the larger screen we have in the living room. The better half has no interest in 'hifi-ing' the living room set up and prefers the sound coming straight from the TV and radio from a little Sony combo or the various DAB boxes we have dotted about .. so that is a no-go area I used to use the TV tuner for radio via my Mac so I could record it but it is now pretty much redundant. As is the SVHS video player at the top of the picture which I used a good while back to convert (family) tapes to digital.

Oh no, TV speakers are entirely unacceptable!
I will either use my refurbished Gale 401s or Ruth's Wharfedale Diamonds for TV sound, with the Caiman-II DAC and her Sony amp.

Oh no, TV speakers are entirely unacceptable! I use headphones so it don't bother me either way - a blessing for the mumbled dialogue prevalent in modern TV drama (think Happy Valley) I take an SPDIF output from the TV via a Beresford 7520 DAC ...
