The first thing of note is that this album is actually by Mark Kozelek & Jimmy Lavalle, but I couldn't fit that in the thread title section! This is not easy-listening, by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a very dark and beautiful record. I can't really describe it, which is why I probably like it so much. It tells some very dark, depressing stories along the way, mainly seeming to be deal with the death of people close to you. Cheery stuff! I don't actually expect many people to like this, so will be interesting to read any observations - good and bad. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perils_from_the_Sea

Thanks for the Album Choice! I've never heard of it and know nothing about them, so it's a step in the dark...

Nice! I have never heard this either, but know Kozelek from the Red House Painters and from his excellent album of acoustic covers 'What's Next to the Moon'. Really looking forward to giving it a listen, so thanks for hosting this month's choice.

So far mixed feelings around this I like the lyrics and vocals on the youtube I quite enjoy its darkness It has one major drawback is that the music is very minimal for my taste I give it a proper listen at the weekend

Not my cup of tea. I found myself skipping tracks and gave up after 5. Sorry.
Maybe try it again another day.
Listened to the rest this evening. Just the same. Talk Talk preferred by me
Thanks for the chance to try it though

I played this last night but something cropped up soon after I fired Spotify up, so it didn't get my full attention and ended up as background music. Not the best start then but I heard enough to make me want to play it again. I love Mark Kozelek's miserablist voice so nothing new there(!) but I was a little taken aback by the music, which is very electronic and not what I was expecting at all. More listening required to give it the proper attention that it deserves.

5/10.
Be more if I could like his voice. There are voices I really like and voices I don't Have not worked out what the differences are or how I would describe them against each other

I feel it's most like John Grant's Pale Green Ghosts with the electronic unpinnings supporting a strong voice. I don't like his voice as much as John Grant and the songs don't seem as memorable. However, good effort. 6/10

The vocals/lyrics are similar to Damien Jurado and John Murry both of whom I'm a fan , this sort of stuff is normally accompanied by acoustic guitar and the sparse electonica takes a bit of getting used to , I don't think it works , it seems out of place given the morose singing.
8 for the vocals and lyrics , 4 for the music , that'll 6/10.

After a couple more plays, I feel I am better able to give an opinion. It scored 6 for me and, I like others it's the musical backing that made me mark it down a bit. I daresay it's something that I may come back to at some time in the future though. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Note to self - must choose something more accessible (or with guitars) next time!

Not at all, Album Choice is a great chance to put out there whatever turns you on. Thanks for introducing me to something new.
