Damn. I seem to have picked up an itch that needs scratching. I quite fancy an older amp and seem drawn to either an Acoustic Research A07,Luxman L1/LV205 and there's a Sony TAFB 940 as well. Im hoping to avoid a warm sound though.
Any thoughts?

The A-07 is cheap at the price and pretty rare. It's not a lot of money to risk. You'll easily make that back if it doesn't do it for you. I'd have bought it myself if didn't have too many amps right now. I've never heard one so I have no idea about the sound, but I always liked the styling and the twin transformers.

Yeah, that's the appeal of that one as well. I love the Luxman look as well though. Might be an L1 on the go for £35

I don't know the Sony but the Lux wasn't their best amp. The AR (notwithstanding my personal affinity with that company's products) would be my preference. It's big and powerful, has a mains transformer per channel, has a flexible range of features and a unique look. A friend had one, along with the matching tuner and turntable and I thought it sounded superb.

Sorry, I just noticed you were referring to two Lux amps. That wasn't their best one either! However, the A-07 WAS Acoustic Research's best amp! (Integrated, that is).

The Sony TAF series are usually pretty good but I don't know that specific model. DC servo looks promising and Sonys don't usually have a warm sound.

Ooohhh it's nice Dave but it's looking like that Acoustic Research is coming out on top....so far.
Just sold my Kef Chorales as well (£40)so that's handy! And they went to a good home!

Lux made double-cream amps for years, then went all bland and thin-toned when the bean counters seemed to take over. These days they're rather silly money and easily beaten by a croft - apparently - as long as the blindfold's on of course The AR amp is a Cambridge-clone I remember, designed well by Stan-The-Man I think. I remember it being smooth and punchy.

I remember it being smooth and punchy. I'm glad you remembered that. I also seemed to remember Stan Curtis designing them. Ive looked several times over the last few years for more info but haven't been able to find it. Stan made good amps IMO so I reckon it should be decent. It's certainly the best example I've seen.

I'm not so sure. I know there was one that was basically a Cambridge amp with different furniture. These.....well, maybe, maybe not. I have some contemporary info that's not within reach just at the moment. Wait for a few days and all will be revealed.

If remember seeing that one before, but not in the flesh. I'd love to know more about the later AR amps, like the one Chris is getting. They really are hard to find info on.
